MEME: "Regressives" NOT "Conservatives"...
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 01:06 PM by zaj
If there ever were a phrase that was worthy of using the over-used "meme" term, this is it.

Don't ever again say "Conservatives". There is nothing conservative about their ideology. Only speak of "Regressives" and if you must, "Throwback Conservatives (like John McCain)".

Regressive Values, Regressive Tax policy, Regressive Foreign Policy, Neo-Regressives...

I vow to not ever say "Conservatives" again.

Do you?

Kick if you agree...

AAR
Ed Shultz
Mike Malloy

We need to get this word out there for all of us like minded progressives to use.

7. Not Neo-Regressive.
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 01:10 PM by Lone Pawn
Neoconservative is a legitimate phrase. They're not conservative, and they're certainly not regressive. They're actually quite radical. But they draw support from the conservative base, and they appeal to conservative "morals" to justify their empire-building.

Along a similar note, I am a fan of the word "progressive." At the same time I think it would be idiotic to call the neoliberal economic movement "neoprogressive," as it has absolutely nothing to do with us.

But other than that this could be an interesting meme.

14. HAHAHAHA! No, you are just fine!
Meme: A meme (rhymes with "dream", but comes from memetic and memory) is a unit of information that replicates from brains or retention systems, such as books, to other brains or retention systems. In more specific terms, a meme is a self-propagating unit of cultural evolution, analogous to the gene (the unit of genetics). The term was coined in 1976 by Richard Dawkins in his controversial bestselling book The Selfish Gene. Memes can represent parts of ideas, languages, tunes, designs, skills, moral and aesthetic values and anything else that is commonly learned and passed on to others as a unit. The study of evolutionary models of information transfer is called memetics.

18. But "regressive" is just an empty word. First you need to define it
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 01:23 PM by PrpgndBrdcstingSystm
Here is how you define progressive and regressive:

We develop a prototype infomercial for late night tv and one for AM radio. These informercials are political in nature but are not
about any candidate or any party. They talk about the rationale
and reasoning for liberal/leftwing/progressive ideas.
THey define regressive and progressive ideas and provide a rational framework.

They talk about why a progressive taxation system with high income taxes on the upper income earners and the wealthy is a good thing. Show how European nations, canada and Australia use taxes to provide
universal healthcare, longterm unemployment payments, welfare
for all poor people, tuition free (or low tuition) college, and free
(or nominal cost) child care (note: I am obviously not saying that
each of those nations provides all of these services for their
citizens).

Show how progressive taxation is the CORE of the progressive/
liberal/leftwing political philosophy. Show all the good things
about taxes. Tell people about how a REAL liberal govt would
work, as opposed to the faux liberal DEmocratic Clinton
Administration.

Show how the GOP is regressive. Show how we have moved backwards and countries like Denmark and Canada have moved forwards.

Then take these prototype informericals to organizations like
moveon.org and ask them to promote them on their websites and
in their media interactions.
On the website ask for donations to pay for air time on late night
tv and AM radio. Set up the collection so that almost all the
money goes to the actual air time. No expensive media consulants
or media buyers. No celebrities. The infomercials would be made
using all amateur volunteers. In the informercials ask for more
money to run more spots.

Concentrate on running infomericals in these states: OH, WI, MN,
PA, MI, IA, other swing states, etc. Especially in cheap rural
media outlets.

Continue this as an ongoing project.

THEN, after a couple of years of running these spots, then progressive Democratic candidates can run on a progressive platform and win. Those candidates can use words like regressive and progressive, and the voters will know what they mean. THat is what the Rightwing has been doing for THIRTY FUCKING YEARS! Wake up, people!

25. NO! Work through well known websites like MOVEON.ORG
Piggyback on their work, their visibility. First develop a prototype informerical. I can help. I know how to use video/audio editing packages. I can edit on my computer. I have broadband. I can download pieces from other volunteers.

THen once we have the prototype, we ask moveon.org to put it on their website. Set up a nonprofit political group (or use one already existing) to handle the funds. Stay away expensive consultants and celebrities. Stay grassroots. Use volunteers. Very few rich people or actvist yuppies are going to want to support someone who says raise taxes on the rich.

Have moveone collect the money. Use the money to run buy cheap time in rural swing state areas.

IMHO! I love it. I've been using it off and on, but now, I'll be more aware of it and try to use it exclusively.

I also liked the idea someone had about adding the term "Radical Cleric" before names like Pat Robinson and Jerry Falwell. As in "Radical Cleric Pat Robinson called on his followers to pray for the deaths of ..."

BTW, we also have to get away from the "radical right." Far left is radical; far right is reactionary. The press who coined this term clearly ditched the day they taught political spectrum in high school civics class.

40. Regressive is the opposite of Progressive...
That's what I was going for... Many of their policies are regressive policies. Some are also "reactionary" but not all. Things like changes to minority rights, tax-policy, and abortion rights are regressive, but not necessarily "reactionary" IMO.

Those are issues the Regressives have been fighting to turn back for years.

They want to regress.
