Does anyone have an update on the construction of U.S. military bases in Iraq?

Haven't seen anything recently. "enduring bases" was the militaryspeak for it, IIRC.

When I was there last year, they were building base housing for dependents at Saddam International (whoops! "Baghdad International") airport.
Ya know, like they planned to be there for a lonnnnnnng time.

3. Welcome to DU. They also replaced the closed Saudi Arabian bases. |

Per business-buddy Osama's request. Mission Accomplished.

4. Well the Iraq bases are going to be busy . . . |
|
But I wouldn't recommend bringing in dependents any time soon.

The grateful citizens of the Revolutionary Islamic Republic of Southern Iraq will welcome us with open arms and invite us to keep a permanent military presence in that part of the former Iraq because their sponsors in Tehran love us so much.
King Saddam I of Sunni Iraq will forgive us for overthrowing his government and invite us to stay there also.
The Supreme Revolutionary Council of the People's Republic of Kurdistan will be falling over themselves for a permanent military presence in their part of the Former Iraq also.

7. Well they'll take the bases when we hightail it . . . |
|
But I don't think they'll install their dependents either. The RIRSI bases will be mortaring the Saddamites (who will reply with mass charges by 15-year-olds, since that worked so well in the 80s), and the Turks will nuke Kurdistan (ALL of Kurdistan) with weapons they bought from Pakistan.
Other than that, it's sure to be nice and peaceful in the former secular nation of Iraq.
