1. I am just so overwhelmed by these statistics
I have decided to just start wearing my overalls and put a straw between my teeth.

There are three kinds of lies - lies, damned lies and statistics. ~Benjamin Disraeli

Disraeli was that there jewish feller what was prime minister of England.

7. HOAX ALERT
Before we go any further with the proposed RedDumb/BlueSmart paradigm, you guys might want to know that humorist Bill Well takes credit for starting the IQ table hoax:
http://americanassembler.com/features/iq_state_averages.htm

Another site has state-by-state IQs, derived from avg. SAT/ACT scores:
http://sq.4mg.com/IQ-States.htm

Note that these are average test scores, not medians, and that the IQ score itself is arrived at by estimate, not by direct testing. The results aren't quite so dismal for bush supporters.

12. 100 is the normalized average IQ
IQ tests are designed in such a way that a person of average intelligence should score about 100.

15. The sooner we stop the insults, the sooner we can start winning again
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 05:58 PM by 0rganism
Calling republicans and southerners stupid is not going to help our cause.

The more the phoney IQ table propagates, the harder it gets for us to make inroads among people who are our natural economic allies.

17. who called Republicans stupid?
I didn't see the word stupid attached to red states on the chart, you are the one calling them stupid.

19. IQ Table itself implicitly calls them stupid, putting most reds in low 90s
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 12:59 AM by 0rganism
You don't think people are meant to infer it when they see the chart? Good grief. What reconciliation can come of saying Mississippi has an average 85 IQ?

> you are the one calling them stupid.

Where? When? I just said propagating a nasty hoax insult won't help us at all.

Why the fuck are you picking a fight with me?

14. Eh? How's that?
Understand how this statistic is derived. This is based on SAT/ACT scores of residents. There's an imperfect correlation between scores of SAT/ACT tests and scores on actual IQ tests.

9. One thing you should be aware of with the "IQ" stats -
the tests are skewed against minorities such as blacks and hispanics to begin with. Many Red states have large minority populations who vote solid blue, but bring down the "IQ" stats on average because of the skewing of the tests.

Also, Red states typically are poorer - also effects test performance. And education levels are poorer - effecting test performance.

To give credence to the value of this ranking, you would have to believe that IQ tests actually measure innate intelligence, rather than knowledge. And there is plenty of evidence out there that IQ tests are highly biased.

13. good point to raise
re: the bias of not only IQ tests but all standardized tests

that's perhaps the biggest flaw in No Child Left Behind, apart from it not even being funded

you can't measure performance on one or two standard tests...it's just ridiculous

I too think that the standard tests are not the best measure of true intelligence but for what it's worth.
