Discussion with my academic advisor
Today I went in and had a conversation with my academic advisor about some progress reports. At the end, the topic turned over to the election (she's a very leftist Jewish woman). Here is roughly how it played out:

ADVISOR: So, I heard you were speaking at that rally on November 3, I just couldn't get over that election

ME: Yeah, it was a good time, I got to have my 15 minutes of fame

ADVISOR: Good

ME: But one thing I said was taken way out of context

ADVISOR: What was it

ME: Well, I was mentioning how the pro-war people mention that the left practice "appeasement" towards brutal dictators

ADVISOR: That's definitely not true

ME: But I mentioned that Bush had also appeased brutal leaders, like when he pours money into Ariel Sharon's regime and signs trade deals with China.

ADVISOR: I see

ME: Of course, some members of Hillel were there, and they threw a fit about it, and had been going around claiming that turned into an anti-Israel rally.

ADVISOR: Well, I am myself pro-Israel, but let's face it, does Bush really care about Israel. The only reason why he gives so much to that country is because he believes in the second coming and thinks it will happen in Jerusalem. Bush is practically owned by the Christian right, he wouldn't care about Israel or the destiny of the Jewish people.

ME: That's what I've believed all along. In fact, the Hillel member that brought it up ended up going on the stage and announcing that she voted for Bush and urged that all Jews should have followed that lead.

ADVISOR: You see, that just doesn't make any sense, I know several Jews that think the same way, and I believe that it simply is nonsense. Bush thinks that he can just march into the middle east and create peace. There has been turmoil for a long time, and I don't see it changing anytime soon.
