The Pro-Life crowd should go see "Vera Drake"---------
I saw it today. 1950 in England and the backroom abortions for the poor and everything taken care of for the rich.

A real eye opener-----is this what the pro-life crowd wants?

Marvelous acting also,a great movie.

1. It wouldn't change their minds
They'd just say that the abortions shouldn't be permitted for either the rich or the poor.

That is, until it happens in their family...

2. Yep. That's what will happen in reality
But that's not what pro-lifers live with. They actually believe that if they outlaw abortions, people won't have them. :eyes:

Must be nice to live in a fantasy land.

to someplace in the Caribbean----it was many years ago and most would have had to do what your mother did.

5. It might change moderates but not
Hard core anti-abortionists.

When I was in college (4 years ago) I was in speech class and we had to give a speech on a controversial topic, state our case and see if in just that 5 minutes we were able to change any minds of our fellow students.

I choose abortion and why Roe V Wade should never be overturned.

I gave the facts, followed by statistics of Back alley abortions, along with personal testimony from people that had received these illegal abortions.
The last 2 minutes I presented a segment of If These Walls Could Talk and Demi Moore's portrayal of an illegal abortion.

Some students came and asked me if I was telling the truth and I gave them copies of all the info I had, I managed to change the minds of some moderates or people that had never really thought about it or had just been fed RW propaganda. I DID not alter the extremsist POV. 2 or 3 RWers came up to me after and were very angry that I had given the speech.. it seems education is not what they want, just hate filled spew. Even the Prof. came up after the speech and told how her sister had flung herself down the stairs in an attempt to end a pregnancy.

So you can try and educate them, you will probably be able to reach the moderates but give up on the extremists.. its going to take more than facts to change their minds. Maybe when their daughters are ripped open with coat hangers or their sisters and mothers fling themselves down the stairs injuring themselves they might become aware, but by that time it will be too late.

6. I doubt even the desperation of a family member would change their minds.

Once they establish the idea in their minds that life begins at conception, there's no way to back down. Everything is black and white to them.

Sounds like your speech was great. You were brave to give it at all. Oh, and that Demi Moore segment - horrifying. I've also read stories of doctors who refused to give anesthesia to women who needed help after a botched abortion. Apparently, some doctors believed it was their duty to make the women suffer as much as possible.

I believe the moderates will come to their senses before its over. I know so many women who have had abortions - I normally don't even think about it but lately it's dawned on me how many people I know whose lives would be completely different if they had not been allowed the chance to choose their own destinies. To be honest, some are no better off than they would have been had they given birth, but others, well, those choices made all the difference in the world.

I know people who "don't believe in abortion" until their period comes late.
