So why start a Peak Oil DU Group?

Rationale: This is the single most important issue of our lifetimes that, strangely, wasn't even briefly acknowledged by any candidate for major office during our last election cycle. In a nutshell, our dependence on Oil has made our entire modern society possible, from our methods of transportation, to the very food that we eat, and even many of the medicines that keep people alive. However, Oil is a non-renewable resource, and one that, based upon scientific evidence, seems likely to hit it's peak production within the next few years, if it hasn't already.

What this means for us is nothing less than a catastrophe of epic proportions that we should have been working to avert 30 years ago, beginning in the 1970s during the last energy crisis. (Well, actually Jimmy Carter, wonderful man that he is, started this process. But then came Ronald Reagan. 'nuff said.)

Even though we should've started working on a solution yesterday, there's still no time like the present. We may now no longer be able to prevent all major upheavals resulting from the peak, but as the old saying goes, being forewarned is forearmed. We need to generate and spread awareness of this critical issue among liberal/progressive/Democratic circles as far and as wide as possible. This will foster discussion of what should become a galvanizing, centerpiece issue for a revitalized, reinvigorated Democratic movement to take back control of our country and our future.
