" Psychologists must be in heaven" |
|
(this was in a buzzflash mailbag letter)
"Psychologists must be in heaven. They have one of the largest experiments in self-deception, denial and groupthink in the history of the world going on right under their noses."

2. I have my BA in psychology ... |
|
and did not pursue an advanced degree because I disagreed with the pharmaceutical invasion. I figured I'd bide my time until analysis had found its place again ... who knew that it would happen so soon, and that this would be the catalyst?

3. That would assume................ |
|
that Psychologists believe in heaven, and hell for that matter. I'm willing to bet an overwhelming percentage don't.

4. Hate to burst your bubble here but........ |

In general most psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists are absolutely nuts in one way or another. I worked in the field for years and more often than not the "Professionals" were far more warped than the patients. The only difference was they hid it better and therefore were able to function in a more socially acceptable way.

6. So, maybe the goal of therapy is "to learn to hide it better?" n/t |

7. In some ways that's correct |
|
Hence the trend to now call it Behavioral Health instead of Mental Health. The importance in on how we act as opposed to how we feel.

9. I don't mean to be rude. But the way you say "most are absolutely nuts" |
|
leads me to believe you don't know what you are talking about. I got a degree in psychology and worked in the field and there are some flakes, but by and large the people in the field are hard working down to earth people.

I probably sounded stronger in that inflection than intended. I am in agreement that the vast majority of folks in the field work extremely hard and are very dedicated-especially those in the public sector. I didn't mean to imply they were psychotic. I was trying to convey that therapists in general don't have all the answers and have just as much turmoil, stress and anxiety in their own lives as everyone else.
I think what you may have picked up on is my disappointment in the field in general which has moved in directions that I find distasteful. I have seen too many Professionals who have needed to compromise on core values which led them into the field in order to stay employed. Many work in highly stressful situations for mediocre pay and need to work with ever increasing demands for productivity. In my own particular work I have seen caseloads and paperwork requirements triple in the past 10 years. That alone has increased work stress and anxiety for most of my colleagues who find that they need to be excessively concerned with requirements and regulations as well as patient care.
You've encountered me at a period of extreme burnout in my career-hence I need to remember that my sarcasm and cynicsm are not universialy shared.

11. Hey..psychologist checking in here! |
|
yeah..they are mostly nuts in the profession..hahahahaha! Its the training though..it has a medical orientation for the most part. I am retired now, but had a private practice in the states. I would not even see a person who was on drugs..well..maybe antidepressants that were situationally used for short periods...following a traumatic event in their lives..like death of a spouce, etc. It is difficult to find a good therapist..but for those of you who have the calling..please continue...the fact that it is so hard to find a good therapist is all the more reason to continue..and u will be needed more and more in the years to come.

i used to think that my patients were the sane ones...it was the rest out there who believed that they did not ever need guidance to find themselves and seperate themselves from the fucked up lies that were fed to them about what they believed and who they were...not those are the true nutcases...ha
