Preparing for the Depression
What do we need and when do we need it by? Any informed speculation as to when it's all going to come crashing down?

1. My guess is early next year
When a combination of a disappointing Christmas retail season, a postponed Iraq election and China dumping its dollars all hit.

2. best to have it as soon as possible
I'm not completely sold that we will have an enormous depression, although I think we will have another downturn. But it's always smart to be out of debt, have some savings, and supplies just in case.

3. a sudden rise
in popularity of 'the blues' music will be the clue and a sudden falling off of country music fans(although the fact that that shit is on primetime surely is a sign the recesion is deeper than the touted 'corner' georgie speeks of.

7. music is everything...
On another post I had on here, if you follow real music, the underground stuff, you will see that the population is pissed off. There is a surge coming, in the form of a new type of angry protest type song.
Any yes, I agree, the blues will make a dramatic return.

5. country music
makes me :puke: Dolly Parton has a new song "Welcome Home" where she says because "God sacrificed his son for us, now it's our turn to sacrifice our sons in Iraq to die for God".

9. Dolly also has a new song on Love Rocks ...
Love Rocks: A Star-Studded Benefit Album to Celebrate Marriage Equality

The Dixie Chicks, Melissa Etheridge, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mandy Moore, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Dido, Carole King, Yoko Ono, Simply Red, Cyndi Lauper, Kimberly Locke & Oleta Adams are only some of the 32 artists that have joined forces to celebrate marriage equality by donating songs of love and inspiration to the Human Rights Campaign’s newest benefit album, Love Rocks. Love Rocks shines a light on the fact that the love and commitment between two people, regardless of sexual orientation, should be treated with dignity, respect and equality. 100% of the net proceeds from the album, co-produced by Centaur Entertainment & HRC, will benefit HRC’s work towards marriage equality.

Available Exclusively From The Human Rights Campaign

Love Rocks

Dolly must be wanting to appeal to all her fan bases.

6. We have at least a year
It looks like the EU and Canada are bailing out the dollar, for now anyway. The dollar rose in the market in those trades but is still not par with the Euro. We have at least a year until we get a repeat of this and next time the EU and Canada won't NEED to bail us out because it won't hurt them near as much.

10. I've been thinking of this lately
What do we need to stock up on? canned goods certainly, hygene products, pet foods, seeds for the garden, fuel for the camp stove. There are going to be shortages coming, abd if we can pick up a little at a time before the excrement hits the air conditioner, we'll be in good shape.
I feel for you guys living in the cities, we're going to be able to survive here, we'll have to regress 100 years or better, but we have a pretty good base to rebuild on.

13. join Costco and stock up
That's what I did this weekend (joined Costco) and plan to stock up as much as I can, it's better to be safe than sorry. Plus, Costco is a big Democratic donor so they are a great company to support.

14. Just think about what will be most important to your family
Stockpile non-perishable food: Canned goods, dry beans, etc.
Buy silver and gold coins, they're the only REAL money, anyway.
Keep your gas tank as full as possible.
Buy a camp stove and heater and stockpile fuel.
Get any dental work done now.

As I am a single woman with grown kids, and am close to early retirement age, I bought a used 30 foot motorhome. That's right, a motorhome. I now live there instead of renting an apartment. It has a 100 gallon gas tank, so I can stockpile fuel. I don't drive it very often, I use my Honda scooter (which I can carry on a platform on the back of my motorhome) for trips around town. It gets 80 miles to the gallon. My home has its own generator (again gasoline), but I am putting a couple of solar panels on the roof to charge the batteries. That's right, BATTERIES. I have four deep cycle RV batteries to run the "house", in addition to the one engine battery. All batteries are charged whenever I drive the motorhome. I have a 45 gallon propane tank which provides for my cookstove, water heater, and furnace. Also, my refrigerator runs on propane when electricity is not available. The motorhome also has two waste holding tanks, a 55 gallon one for the shower and sinks, and a 45 gallon one for the toilet. I can park by the side of the road for up to two weeks before I need to dump the holding tanks and take on fresh water. And, if I don't like what's going down in the neighborhood, I can stick the key in the ignition, and drive that mama on down the road. This is the ultimate in mobility. I just love having the freedom to take my home with me. And I am prepared to live comfortably without electricity, city water, etc.
But think about it. Perhaps a motorhome is not for you and your family, but a small travel trailer or pop-up would work. Either may be used as a lifeboat in the coming storm.

18. Invest in precious metals: gold, silver, etc.
supposedly their value jumps up when everything else swirls down the toilet economically.
I should point out I have no way to verify this advice, but I've always heard knowledgable people spout it.

It has the beauty of being something you should buy NOW, before the economy tanks, so you can buy a lot at cheaper prices. If you wait too long, there's no advantage.
