Canada rolls out the unwelcome mat for * in Ottawa (pics inside)
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 10:08 PM by Iceburg
I have never seen a crowd so large in Ottawa (probably 50,000+), nor have I ever seen so many police in riot gear. Look for a big sale sale on slightly used riot gear next week on E-Bay. It is highly unlikey we will ver need it again unless * plans a return visit.

The protest was a very well organized ... people of all ages, races and spectrums of life.

Nevertheless, it will cost Canadians in excess of $5,000,000 to accommodate *. If * had simply stayed at home and sent a fax, that would be $5M more that we could have contributed to the Iraqis.

A special note to my fellow Americans:
Please let it be understood that we are protesting the policies of * and that there was not a hint of animosity toward our good neighbour and friends in the USA. I am very proud of my fellow citizens for making this distinction. Viva America!

4. Absolutely Great Photos Iceburg
btw - What kind of camera are you using? I'm looking to upgrade soon from my Canon G2. Too much like a point and shoot for my liking.

6. Its a Sony CyberShot 5.0...pretty much a point and shoot
In fact most of the photos I took with the camera way above my head. Sadly, I had to dlete some shots 'cause I ran out of mem.

13. Wow, a Sony
Who would've thought.

Judging by your cop shots, you must have been close by when things got a little tense. Me, I booked out to the NAC and watched from there. What's your take?

16. I was inches from the cops ... it was indeed tense !
problem was I ran out of memory and had to start deleting early shots. I was looking into the eyes of the first liners. The head-copper initiated the command to put on their gas masks, and when I saw that CNN, CBS camera people followed ... that's when I started looking for safe harbour -- not wanting to wrinkle my crinoline.

20. You must have been on wheels Can .... how did you snag that one?
My sister was on the Rideau Street walkover and when I said their must have been 200-300 police at the Chateau Laurier/Rideau Street area she said ... NO!!! there probably was a thousand if you count the ones in the buildings and around the corners.

Did you happen to snap the snipers on the rooftops around Laurier and Wellington Streets for "our history" books?

22. Not enough zoom
I tried to snap one when I saw three guys on top of the Westin. They disappeared before I was ready to shoot. Later I saw two more but with my limited zoom it didn't seem worth it. I did get this though.

I pretty sure he was checking out a babe at the Westin!

9. Just a little curious, to those DU'ers who still watch news on TV.
Is this being covered by any of the networks? Also, are the protests being covered in Canada?

10-15 years ago this would be plastered all over the tube.

12. Heavy coverage in Canada .. all stations reporting live
Don't let 'em fool ya with their crowd count. A picture is worth a thousand words and you won't see that many people converged on Parliament Hill even on "Canada Day". The protest was a

H U G E

success.

15. Thank you Iceburg in Canada.
Bush will not show himself too often here I think he is afraid of potential crowds. We won't see much of what goes on here other than on the internet(s).

Do show George a good time.

24. No Riots please.
The wingnuts want riots. I think you could get a similar size crowd in most American cities with signs.

Wonder why the Canadian police put on gas masks in the pictures?

26. The chance of a riot yesterday was near ZERO...
moms with strollers aren't the provactive type. The protesters were extremely sympathetic to the police.
The tension came primarily from seeing our police in riot gear.

However, one jerk in the crowd of 10's of thousands sprayed red paint on one of the policemen.

Thanks to *, we now have thousands of dollars worth of slightly used riot gear (no scuff marks) that will have to sold or stored until the next time he decides to leave the tree.

He did a short segment on it. It's the only "news" program I've watched today.
