3. Americans are convinced.................... |
|
that they live in the greatest country in the world and that god wanted it that way. The other countries can go suck eggs, they can't measure up to god's chosen country. They are the most nationalistic by far, and among the most ignorant and arrogant as well.

My best college buddy is Serbian, a well-educated, distiguished lawyer at a top firm. And he goes completely tin-foil-hat about Croats and other dark, satanic beings.

On DU, I've never seen a better excuse for people to exercise their prejudices than this poll.
I really doubt anyone here has ANY evidence to show who is more nationalistic than whom.

being called "nationalistic" isn't nescesarily bad. being nationalistic means you have a strong love of your country and culture, how is that bad?

good or bad (and this may surprise you, but flattery can also be a form of prejudice. Imagine how you'd feel being a Japanese who was bad at math), a generalization about a group of people that has no factual basis is based on prejudice.

|
and fascism is bad. or hadn't you noticed?
see the post-yugoslavian conflicts.
serbian nationalists vs. croatian nationalists vs. bosnian muslim nationalists vs. kosovan albanian nationalists
god doesn't bless countries. "god" is beyond our comprehension.

20. That's only half of the definition |
|
Nationalism usually implies that you consider one nation to be inherently superior to others; much as Stormfront strongly loves white people and culture, and considers other races to be inferior.

16. in part you are correct, |

On the other hand: flags in classrooms, flag pledge in school and before sport events, god bless... . I have tried to count the flags while moving through a quit east coast town - and had to give up. This does say nothing about individuals, not even the people in general. But I have yet to see a country where nationalistic symbols are used as frequently as in the US. I do not even think that it is a bad thing - strange maybe, but the US has a proud tradition.

18. How fitting that the poll itself is based on national generalizations |
|
Anyway, I think nationalism is the height of social egotism: believing that your country is the best essentially because you were born in it.
A wise man said that nationalism is arbitrarily valuing real estate over principles.
