1. Look, you may not like it, BUT...
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 06:57 PM by Cuban_Liberal
There is no 'one size fits all' sex ed program, and abstinence education is part of any sensible curriculum. Let's face it, it's hard to contract HIV, and STD or get pregnant, if you are abstinent.

2. Abstinence only conveniently ignores masturbation...
when discussing fool proof methods for avoiding pregnancy and STDs.

Face it, "abstinence-only" is puritanical bullshit, and it doesn't help a thing.

6. Abstinence is not CHASTITY!
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 07:04 PM by Cuban_Liberal
It would help if we could all use appropriate terminology. You can masturbate when you are abstinent; you cannot masturbate when you are chaste.

8. Remember Jocelyn Elders?
The same people who advocate "Abstinence only" are the same tight-wads that got all upset at her.

16. Well, you're basically giving lip service to the abstinence only crowd...
and they're a bunch of perverted hypocrites. I mean you say you only want to go halfway, that you'll pull out before it goes to far, but nevertheless...

Some puns intended.

Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 07:28 PM by Cuban_Liberal
I'm saying that it should be included as PART--- p-a-r-t, a portion, something less than the whole, a unit in a multi-unit curriculum---- of a sex-ed curriculum. My post says that, and nothing more, Anything else read into it comes from YOUR biases, not anything I wrote.

Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 07:03 PM by flobee1kenobi
but when they claim absitance as the ONLY solution, it starts to become cultist thinking and very scary
Do YOU think that denying kids condoms will stop them from having sex?

9. Oh, hell no.
That's why I was very clear that it should only be a part of any responsible sex-ed program.

4. abstinence-only sex ed: yeah, that's been so effective for so many
thousands of years. Tell kids not to do it so they won't. Uh-huh.

5. Most abstinence only students *do* succumb
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 07:05 PM by Mandate My Ass
and they are the ones least likely to protect themselves from pregnancy or STDs.

Teenagers are gonna have sex, always did, always will. Give them the options that are available. Abstain or protect yourself and here's how.

7. I dislike ignorance....
And abstinence only sex-ed promotes ignorance. Sure you won't get a disease or pregnant, but the program only functions on a presumption (abstinence) that runs contrary to human nature (human sexual urge). Since most people have sex at some point in their lives, to not prepare them for that eventuality is fucking ridiculous. It produces people incapable of protecting themselves when they eventually do decide. That is ignorance.

Ignorance is good right? It is if you are into exploiting persons and controlling the ignorant.

I clearly stated it should be P-A-R-T of a sex-ed program, not the ONLY program.

14. And my students believed that injecting themselves with bleach...
would cure AIDS and other STDs.

Ignorance is sooooooooo dangerous!

My daughter took the You & Your Sexuality class at church (UU, of course) when she was 12. The course teaches the difference between biology and romance.

The focus was primarily on being ready and able to deal with the emotional and biological aftermath of sex.

We sing honest lullabies at our house.

15. My thoughts as a 14 year old....
from my blog www.anti-bush.blogspot.com : Things are different with different kids. I'd say that there is a huge range of maturity levels in my classes. I'm not real opinionated about what we should do in public schools but I can tell you that only abstinence sex-ed is just a joke. Here is what I want parents to know from this 14 year old about sex-ed, different things work for different kids and it's all based on the maturity level of your child. For some Abstinence sex-ed is great for others it is laughable.

18. Yes, and somethings are common among different kids.
Like, admit it or not, they're a bunch of horny little fibbers. God bless them. So that's why the ones who claim to be abstinent have just as many STDs as the ones who tell the truth.

19. I am surprised that they haven't killed 2 birds with one stone.
When they start mental health screening and drugging our kids, certainly they can mix in some libido surpressants, too. Why haven't the morality police thought of that yet?

22. That is just crazy!
They don't let the kids drive a car without proper instructions, why would they not want them to know how to be safe!?
I don't get it!
But then I educated my son and foster son myself.
