20th anniversay of the Bhopal disaster.
''Bhopal was the greatest human rights disaster arising from corporate negligence'', said AI Secretary General Irene Khan, who charged that both the leak and the companies' failure to fully compensate its victims violated their basic rights, including the rights to life and to health.

That settlement has so far provided an average of less than 500 dollars to each of about half a million victims. The same victims are slated to receive from the Indian government a second allotment of almost 500 dollars over the next year as a result of the accumulation of interest on the original payment.

But seriously. I'll bet most people have never heard of it before. And that's fucked up.

3. And how many are waiting to happen?
I think specifically of areas like the Gulf Coast of Texas and the area around Charleston, West Virginia, both of which are ripe with chemical plants where one valve accidentally left open would be devastating. I know in WV it's a fairly regular occurence where something happens at one of the plants and there's a warning to stay inside.

And Chemical Valley in WV is the only other place on the planet where the chemical involved at Bhopal can be found.

6. You know, you are absolutely correct about that...
...as America moves to third world status with the continuous draining of jobs, these wasteland industries will become major hazardous areas that would fall into the same neglect and disrepair and could become the future Bhopols of America. It happened in the former Soviet Union and it could very well happen here.

7. Bhopal was 6 September 11ths
With people continuing to suffer and die today due to the effects of the disaster caused by Union Carbide's racism, arrogance and negligence.

I remember reading somewhere that the settlement was like $300 per victim.

Guess brown lives aren't worth very much.
