Although I still think it's too simplistic and other axes ought to be added,...at least it gives folks some direction about where their believes lie in our political spectrum.

No surprise here. I am convinced that almost everybody on DU who takes the political compass would wind up somewhere in the lower left quadrant. In fact, I suspect that many Americans in their heart would lean in that direction.

What I find disturbing is how many contemporary politicians are classified as authoritarian right. What do you guys make of that? Are they out of step?

32. I don't know but
I think most people don't really know they're political affinity and i think most republicans who took the test and showed up in the south left would probably think the test was rigged I can tell you one thing every political test i have ever taken has put me either into the liberal left or socialist category. I do think republicans like bush are accurately placed by the test just by looking at the policies bush supports and pushes. I am sure a number of the bush supporters are genuine republicans but a lot of republicans i have met personally (that are not religious) actually believe that republicans support an agenda thats for the poor and that liberals support an agenda that supports the rich. Which is probably why the current political mind set of the people are ass backward from what they were years ago, it used to be the harder it was for poor people, the worse the living standards got the more people would lean to the left and now the worse things get the more people lean to the right. As for religious people i have had several religious people that i know take the test some of them end up in the left some end up in the right but almost all of them end up authoritarian. Unless of course they come from a really liberal church that doesn't focus on old testament crap i know the church my grandmother goes to is pushes old testament a lot.

47. Left / Right is irrelevant, and Libertarian is not the opposite of Authori

The opposite of Authoritarian is Democracy, where Authoritarian is simply a form of Despotism (*

If you'd look into the libertarian idiology you'd find that much of it is essentially the same as the no-holes-barred capitalism that is practiced by the big corporations. The difference is that Libertarians argue that government should be abandoned and everyhing should be left to market forces. One argument for that is that government is bad because it is corrupt. Interstingly enough you'll have a hard time finding a Libertarian who will mention corporate corruption.

This so called political compass serves no other purpose then to put "Libertarianism" on the map, as though it is a good thing.

*)
Despotism is the opposite of Democracy; it is one continuous scale with less despotism/more democracy towards one end of the scale, and more despotism/less democracy towards the other end of the scale.
The extent of despotism vs democracy in a society can be measured by things such as repression of minorities, economic unequality.

Fascism, tyranny, totalitarianism, dictatorship etc are all forms of despotism. All these have in common that they are anti-democratic.

As explained in the educational movie "Despotism", produced by Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1946.
http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=prelinger&collectionid=00178
It is as relevant now as it was then.

49. They aren't referring to libertarian market ideology
The quiz is referring to civil libertarianism vs. moral authoritarianism.

However, in that respect the test is fundamentally flawed. At one point, you are asked whether you personally believe that pre-marital sex is immoral.

However, this overlooks the obvious fact that morality and legality are two different things. I personally consider it immoral of my cousin to lie to me about my aunt, but it is not illegal, nor should it be.

A more germane question for the purposes of the quiz would be whether you believe that law enforcement needs to intervene to prevent pre-marital sex or that government should actively discourage it.

54. Yeah I thought a lot of the questions on the test were very flawed
I thought the entire section about religion was irrelevent, actually. The only thing relevant about religion in relation to politics is whether or not you believe you have a moral imperative to enforce the dogma of your religion as law. I'm a Catholic, and granted I'm a very non-dogmatic Catholic, but it's irrelevant anyway - as I believe in the separation of church and state, I do not believe my personal religious views (or anyone else's) have any bearing at all on the policies this country should enact.

And some of the questions were just strange, like the one about "it's a sad commentary on our society that water is bottled and manufactured." WTF? I drink bottled water all the time. That, to me, is absolutely irrelevant in regards to my political beliefs.

I scored around -3.25 on both economic and social factors, but I still think the quiz is deeply flawed. Also, since the quiz is British (I think...) it doesn't accurately reflect American politics very well. I think it's dangerous to imply that GWB and John Kerry are ideologically similar, when any discerning student of politics can tell you, by studying their records and beliefs, that that isn't so. Did they take Kerry's devout Catholicism into consideration, which probably affects some of his opinions on the "religion/morality" section? If so, then that is a mistake, since Kerry has made perfectly clear that he has no intentions (unlike Bush) of legislating his religion into law.

61. Leftist Libertarianism
Unfortunately, the "anarcho" capitalists have cooped the word and debased its meaning. The opposite of Authoritarianism isn't Democracy but Anarchism. Democracy can devolve into tyranny of the masses, which is a kind of authoritarianism. As a disillusioned former LP member, I can assure you that not all libertarians are enamored with laissez faire corporate capitalism.

Emma Goldman was a leftist libertarian.

Economic Left/Right: -5.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.67
