A question to DUers in college. How many Do you kno have health insurance?
Over the last couple years I've really learned how screwed up the health care system is. I go to a college where most of the students commute from home. They're pretty much middle class...

But I'd say that only 40% at most may have health insurance. I have a friend that badly sprained his ancle playing basketball. He was lmping for weeks and finally did get it checked (but was charged a crazy bill for an x ray and the doctor was never even that helpfull). I have another friend that got in a car accident and got a nasty bruise on his head. He didn't get checked either. He's lucky he didn't suffer a concussion. Yet another friend had a bad stomach ache. He said he couldn't do a damn thing about it.

So, other college DUers. Do you have health insurance? How many do you know have it?

2. At UCSB
All students are required to have health insurance. You can either pay for a plan w/ Student Health or waive it w/ another plan.

3. Some states require it
NY state is one - if you don't have health care, the school has to provide it (though that means that the student has to pay for it).

I had healthcare in college because of my job. When I was in grad school in NY state, I had healthcare because I had to buy it through Columbia (I didn't have a job then that gave health insurance).

4. Everyone I know has it...
...then again, everyone I know here at Wisconsin is a grad student research assistant or teaching assistant-- we get health insurance benefits. Undergrads? I have no idea...

5. my school requires it
Luckily, I'm still under my mom's plan- Blue Cross/Blue Shield- but all MA colleges require coverage and will give you coverage per semester.

7. At U of Calif. campuses, health insurance is included in student fees
And you can opt out of it if you are already covered by a similar plan.

All in all, its required.

One of the reasons I'm about to take a year off and go back to work. I don't really want to do it, but I'm tired of scraping by. I feel ashamed to have to borrow a couple of hundred bucks every couple of months from my parents at 26 years old, but between health insurance, car insurance, food, rent, books, tuition, utilities, and sundrys, I just can't quite make it.

9. at Washington U it's required
and you can't even opt-out of their plan if you already have insurance. It was a waste of money when I was covered under my parents' plan (3 dependents cost the same as 2 for them). Now that I'm married, though, I'm glad I can get health insurance for only $1000/yr - even if it is a really crappy plan.
