Bible verses against bushco's plans/actions
http://timeforachange.bluelemur.com/liberalchristians.htm#scripture

Interesting site.

(about 10 down)

"He who oppresses the poor blasphemes his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy glorifies him." (Proverbs 14:31)

"He who oppresses the poor to enrich himself will yield up his gains to the rich as sheer loss. Injure not the poor because they are poor, nor crush the needy at the gate; For the LORD will defend their cause, and will plunder the lives of those who plunder them. Open your mouth in behalf of the dumb, and for the rights of the destitute; Open your mouth, decree what is just, defend the needy and the poor!" (Proverbs 14:31, 22:16, 22-3, 31:8-9")

"Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?" (Isaiah 10:1-3)

"The scoundrel's methods are wicked, he makes up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just. But the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands." (Isaiah 32:7,8)

"Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers....Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?'" (Isaiah 58:3,6,7,10)

1. You should have added:
"'Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not plead the case of the fatherless to win it, they do not defend the rights of the poor. Should I not punish them for this?' declares the LORD . 'Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this?'" (Jeremiah 5:27-29)

OUCH!

3. Matthew 25:40

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

4. Matthew 19: 23-24
23 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Trot this one out next time Bush, the GOPers, and their Evangelical stalking horses try to abolish more taxes for the richest Americans. It will go over like a turd in the punchbowl.

They can't deal with it morally so they just cover their ears, shake their heads and go: "Noo Noo Noo Noo Noo!!!"

6. They'll dodge it, and here's how:
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 04:22 PM by Mike Niendorff
Their stock response is that "the eye of the needle" is really a reference to an obscure entry-gate into Jerusalem, so Jesus wasn't REALLY saying anything about wealth and Christianity being mutually exclusive or anything, he just was speaking in code.

In other news, if you point out to them that Jesus' advice to the rich young ruler was (and I quote) "sell all you have and give the money to the poor", they'll dodge that one too. Their first dodge is to claim that this advice was only just for that particular man personally. And if that dodge fails, they'll claim that, ok, well, it must only apply to people who "cling" to their possessions. The point being, of course, that it certainly doesn't apply to them. Hey, some of them even tithe (as though the "rich young ruler" didn't!), so they've "kept all the teachings of the law" that they really need to. Now, go away and stop bothering them, you heathen :)

Bottom line : if you want to see one of these far-right "Christians" start tap dancing like Gregory Hines on acid, just point out the plain and simple teachings of Jesus on the subject of personal wealth. They'll have a ready dodge for every verse, every teaching, every word that they don't want to hear, but in the process you'll see a VERY powerful demonstration of where their hearts really are (and really aren't).

"You cannot serve both God and money."

(Note also that the ONLY time Jesus ever resorted to physical violence was to drive the religious businessmen out of the temple. Nah, no lesson there either, I'm sure. Jesus was probably just having a bad day).

7. the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.
This is in Isaiah 32, a good credo for the Democratic Party. It defines what "righteousness" really means, i.e., being just to the poor and the weak and the needy. Isaiah would definitely be a Democrat were he alive today. He prophesies a day when "the vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful. For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the Lord, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail." And then the next verse: "But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand." (Isa 32: 5-8)

8. My Scripture for Bush..and Many Others
St. Matthew 7: 21-23

Mat 7:21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
