CASE AGAINST IRAQ

CIA questioned evidence linking Iraq, uranium purchase

Reports mentioned in State of Union address dismissed as forgery

By DANA PRIEST AND KAREN DEYOUNG Washington Post

Sunday, March 30, 2003

Washington -- CIA officials now say they communicated significant
doubts to the administration about the evidence backing up charges
that Iraq tried to purchase uranium from Africa for nuclear weapons,
charges that found their way into President Bush's State of the
Union address, a State Department "fact sheet" and public remarks by
numerous senior officials.

That evidence was dismissed as a forgery early this month by
United Nations officials investigating Iraq's weapons of mass
destruction programs. The Bush administration does not dispute this
conclusion.

Asked how the administration came to back up one of its principal
allegations against Iraq with information its own intelligence
service considered faulty, officials said all such assertions were
carefully tailored to stay within the bounds of certainty. As for
the State of the Union address, a White House spokesman said, "all
presidential speeches are fully vetted by the White House staff and
relevant U.S. government agencies for factual correctness."

Questioned about the forgery during a recent congressional
hearing, Secretary of State Colin Powell said, "We were aware of
this piece of evidence, and it was provided in good faith to the
(U.N.) inspectors."

But thanks Andy. :)

On edit: This is the 3/22 WP passage that's not in the original post:

"The policy guys make decisions about things like this," said one official, referring to the uranium evidence. When the State Department "fact sheet" was issued, the official said, "people winced and thought, 'Why are you repeating this trash?' ".

and why I'd like to see the 3/30 URL

*edited for clarity, sorry

13. I don't think so. Where is this passage in the original post?

"The policy guys make decisions about things like this," said one official, referring to the uranium evidence. When the State Department "fact sheet" was issued, the official said, "people winced and thought, 'Why are you repeating this trash?' "

I find THAT part particulary intriguing.

It's entirely possible I missed it, so any help you can give... :)

15. lol, we are dancing in circles.
I know it's in the 3/22 article you cite, Andy, but it's not in the original post.

They are different, which is why I asked for the URL to the MARCH 30th article, not the article of the 22nd. :)

16. I think possibly,...there is no URL for the March 30th article,
Edited on Fri Jul-11-03 08:58 PM by Liberal_Andy
because there was no 3/30 article. It was published on 3/22. You'll notice, the origional post did not show a URL, but was word for word the same as the 3/22 one, even the same reporters.

Maybe Valabor just got the date wrong.

2. The British said Saddam had tried to buy Uranium.
CIA knew it wasn't true. But it was true that Britain had said it. That made it true enough to be in the State of Union address. This is what this White House thinks is bringing credibilty back?

11. Andy - look at the title of this thread.
MARCH 30th.

I had no reason to look at March 22nd till you provided a URL --Thanks again :) -- I then went to your URL and read, but didn't find the March 30th paragraph I referenced from the article - did you find it anywhere?

18. sorry for the confusion!
Sorry for the confusion over March 22 vs. 30.

Apparently, this was published originally in the Wash Post on 3/22, but it was printed again on 3/30 in the Milwaukee Sentinel, where I got this version.

Sorry about that. Same article, different papers, though the Sentinel obviously attributed it to the Post.
