23. Just go get a construction job..Anything that will pay something.
Wait Tables, Deliver Pizza...Don't do fast food...Just do something in the meantime. AS far as your profession, you need to face up to the fact that it may be over for you..Just do what you have to to survive. No reason to be unemployed. You may be UNDERemployed for a while but I'm sure you'll get back up somewhere near where you used to be with much effort and determination.

47. people who aren't broke/who have jobs
often feel free to dispense advice rather freely.

i'm stuck in a texas backwater and have tried to find work in retail (have close to 10 years experience, but working in corporate offices).

i'll get the interview, but they always ask me about what i did for the past 10 years. the last retail job i had was in 1993, so i don't get these jobs, as they seem really concerned about how long i plan on staying.

here's the other part: retail jobs often start you out with 15 - 20 hours per week at $7/hr. around here (beaumont, tx area).

so, getting ANY job often not only isn't practicable, 9 times out 10 it is impossible.

i hear ya.

you're probably well-intentioned though.

but the last thing a person who just got done spending their last $15 needs to hear is something about god, unless of course god is passing out $100 bills or something.

33. Good luck, my friend.
I was where you are now, about a year and a half ago. I had to relocate to Mississippi, but I landed in a great position, in a great firm, working with good people. (I'm still 700 miles from my wife and kids, and get home whenever I can!). I fervently hope that it's the same for you, and soon. Not that you have to relocate or be separated from you family, but that you find something great, better than you had before. I was at the point of no return -- Smith & Wesson in my hand, ready to do it. Something stopped me. And then things got better.

Be well. I'm still digging out of the hole, but the light is at the end of the tunnel for me.

44. Perseverance my friend. You've got friends here so Perseverance.
From the looks of it this thread may have scared up some work for you.

As for the people that think there are jobs everywhere that's not exactly true. In depressed areas those construction jobs, if you've got those skills, and other assorted "un-skilled" labor positions are a bitch to get because there are a whole lot of people who'll take practically zip in pay due to them losing their old jobs. Plus there's always the danger in getting too caught up in the survival job to seek out the kind of job that you need to maintain what you were maintaining prior to losing the first job.

It can be a devastating drop.

Hang in there.

49. Come to Georgia
There are jobs. My brother in law just got laid off by MCI in DC and found a job right away in GA as a LAN/WAN engineer. Don't know how long it will last, but at least it's a job.

And after all, Georgia couldn't be any worse than Ohio.

Good luck and take care.

50. gives me an idea
we should have an employment support board on here. Anyone who has jobs to post or are seeking jobs post your skills. I am a small new business owner and I'm actually seeking someone. It's not much but I think I'd rather hire someone from here that is willing to get in on the ground floor of something and that i know is of similar beliefs than go through the whole search process around my city. I'm sure anyone who posted would be suprised how many people in the same area might respond. thoughts? Probably been proposed before.

I did get 4 phone calls about jobs today, not quite what I am used to but, hell i'll take it... the highest one today was 16 an hour, for a network administrator position, I dont know if anyone remembers, but just a touch over 4 years ago, those jobs were paying 30-40 an hour.. i think.. hey dont get me wrong I am not complaining, I was even contemplating getting a job at the waffle house...
