An Experiment that Proves Absinthe is Beneficial to Frogs
An Experiment that Proves Absinthe is Beneficial to Frogs
Scientists have been trying to understand the effects of the green fairy for centuries. Here's a bizarre account of an experiment involving fish, frogs and absinthe, as performed by a 19th century scientist named Van Helmont.

Tank A was filled with three litres of distilled water, chemically pure, boiled and allowed to cool at air temperature; the bottom of the tank was filled with gravel sterilized at 130 degrees Celsius; in the tank were placed two freshwater fish, two saltwater fish, and a frog; a little wooden ladder (sterilized at the same time as the gravel) would permit the frog to leave his tank.

Tank B was filled with three litres of sea water (gathered at Trouville, at the end of the jetty-promenade) and lined with gravel and a ladder as before, and in this tank were put two freshwater fish and a frog.

Tank C was filled with three litres of spring water (Dhuys), gravel and a ladder, and in it were placed two saltwater fish and a frog.

Tank D was filled with three litres of spring water (Dhuys) and one centilitre of sixty degree commercial absinthe. No special brand name. Only a frog was placed in this tank with a ladder and the gravel.

must see! rest at....

2. No wonder absinthe is illegal in the US

Quite apart from the high alcohol content, traditionally 68% abv, absinthe contains the herb 'wormwood' (Artemisia absinthium). This bitter herb contains a chemical called thujone, which is very similar to the active chemical in cannabis, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Analysis by scientists in the 1960s & 70s shows that this similarity is not a coincidence. Both chemicals are terpenoids. This means that 'both thujone and THC exert their psychotomimetic agents by interacting with a common receptor in the central nervous system', said scientist J del Castillo when writing an article on similarities between the psychological effects attributed to absinthe and those of marijuana (Nature magazine, January 31st 1975).

Wormwood is legal and easy to grow, you can smoke it or make tea

5. Two of its most famous addicts killed themselves
Van Gogh and Hemmingway. Of course, this was after they created some of the most significant artwork in western history.

Dangerous stuff. I want some.

4. Actually Thujone is more related to nerve gas....
or Botox

The main effect is numbness. Hurts the liver as does the high alcohol.

7. That is THE stupidest "experiment" I've ever heard of.
Freshwater fish in saltwater tanks=fish died and frog left.
Saltwater fish in freshwater tanks=fish died and frog left.
"Van Helmont's conclusion: saltwater is poisonous", "... springwater is poisonous".

My conclusion: Van Helmont was a complete idiot incapable of basic logic.
