Scalia opens his mouth: "jews are safer with christians in charge"

Scalia To Synagogue - Jews Are Safer With Christians In Charge

Antonin Scalia, the man most likely to be our next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, turned history on its head recently when he attended an Orthodox synagogue in New York and claimed that the Founders intended for their Christianity to play a part in government. Scalia then went so far as to suggest that the reason Hitler was able to initiate the Holocaust was because of German separation of church and state.

-snip-

Scalia has an extraordinary way of not letting facts confound his arguments, but this time he's gone completely over the top by suggesting that a separation of church and state facilitated the Holocaust. If his comments had gotten wider coverage (they were only noted in one small AP article, and one in the Jerusalem Post), they may have brought America's largest religious communities - both Christian and Jewish - into the streets.

-snip-

The Puritans, for example, passed a law in Plymouth Colony in 1658 that said, "No Quaker Rantor or any other such corrupt person shall be a freeman in this Corporation ." Puritans banned Quakers from Massachusetts under pain of death, and, as Norman Cousins notes in his book about the faith of the Founders, In God We Trust, "And when Quakers persisted in returning in defiance of law, and in practicing their religious faith, the Puritans made good the threat of death; Quaker women were burned at the stake."

-large snip-

For example, as Reverend Moon has moved more and more into the political realm - from funding activities of both George H.W. Bush and his son George W. Bush, to funding the money-losing but politically activist Washington Times newspaper, to financially bailing out Jerry Falwell, to setting up numerous charities that now ask for federal funding - we see an increasing and ominous participation of legislators and Moonies. Moon, for example, was crowned by several members of Congress in the Senate Dirksen Office building on March 23, 2004. As the Washington Post noted in a July 21 story by Charles Babington, Moon himself proclaimed to our elected representatives attending the ceremony, "Emperors, kings and presidents . . . have declared to all Heaven and Earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent."

-snip-

In some distant place, Adolf Hitler and Bishop Müller must be smiling at Scalia's encouragement of the growing conflation of church and state in America. It's exactly what they worked so hard to achieve, and what helped make their horrors possible.

And Thomas Jefferson and James Madison must have tears in their eyes.

4. Hitler was a Catholic, just like Scalia
Catholic paramilitary organizations played a major part in bringing the Nazis to power, which isn't surprising, since they're both expression of conservative power.

Plymouth wasn't the birthplace of English-speaking colonialism in what's now the United States; Jamestown was 13 years earlier, and it was a business venture, pure and simple.

Conservatives, who worship the past, should learn their damned history.

I'd like to hear how this dick explains Article 11 of the 1797 treaty with the Barbary Pirates.

23. I'm Catholic and I'm not a NAZI
Hitler was also head of a Lutheran country and called Luther the father of Germany. Just some balanced random thoughts. By the way, John Kerry is Catholic also.

25. one out of seven humans is a Roman Catholic
and many don't suck at all.

The Catholic Church is a mixed bag of bad and good, the good being social concerns and dislike of the death penalty, and the bad being the subject for some other time.

My beef is that most Christians are--like most major religions--completely unwilling to accept responsibility for actions justified or supported by their faith. Hitler used Christianity often in his speeches to proclaim its necessity in culture, and his hatred of Communism was fueled by his hatred of Atheism.

Those things on the wings of Luftwaffe planes were crosses, and it IS that cross. It's galling how faith blinds so many to completely absolve themselves of responsibility and glorify their feeling of specialness, whereas infidels and heretics must be responsible for their every action.

This was not meant to slag Catholics, but the monarchic assholes of Opus Dei aren't just some kind of weird aberration, they spring from the heart and soul of the dark part of the faith. It's a bummer to the nice folk who believe, but it's true.

More than anything else, most religions glorify the dislike of thinking, demanding answers and obedience with their "faith". This is backwards. Sure, people have a right to seek solace, but they don't have a right to be above questioning for their actions or the actions of others within their political group, and religions are inherently political organizations. Franco was a Catholic. Mussolini was a Catholic too, and even petitioned the Pope to excommunicate Hitler in 1938, but the Pope refused.

If you take the good, you have to take the bad.

Hey, Tim McVeigh asked for--and received--last rites, so he died a good Catholic boy too...

27. i totally agree
though you should NOT blame the current church for past happenings, you should expect some sort of acknowledgement.

however, by the same token, athiests should accept responsibility for Stalin.

5. Christianity and Jews
"The National Government will regard it as its first and foremost duty to revive in the nation the spirit of unity and cooperation. It will preserve and defend those basic principles on which our nation has been built. It regards Christianity as the foundation of our national morality, and the family as the basis of national life."

Of the USA - and they STILL refused entry of thousands of Jewish refugees.

They were turned away and had to sail back to Europe.

Talk about revisionist history....Mr. Scalia.

19. 75% of Jews voted for Kerry
and Jews are only 3% of the US, so not too many Bush voters in that population.

Bush did a little better than in 2000, but still is not popular with Jewish voters.

21. Jews and Christianity
Long before the Spanish Inquisition, during the times of the expuslions and pogroms, as many European Jews as could got themselves into the Muslim territories in Al-Andaluz and North Africa, where they would be respected as People of the Book. At the Reconquista, they adapted by superficial conversion to Christianity. That's how there came to be so many in southern Spain for the Inquisition to persecute.

11. Wonder how Tony explains THIS???
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 01:21 PM by BiggJawn

In case you can't get Babelfish to work, it says "God is with Us". This little buckle held up the Wermacht's pants.

Hitler professed a Christian belief (yes, i know it's less embarrassing to blame him on us Atheists, but, facts are FACTS) struck deals with the pope, and outlawed the Freethinker's Societies and arrested their leadership.

Then after he fell on his knees, he fell on the Jews (to steal a phrase about the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock)

And THIS (Tony the Fat) is a man who went to COLLEGE... Can you imagine what kind of shit is rolling around in the grey matter of Chimpy's new high-school drop-out Gestapo chief?

Expect more outrageous statements. If they fly over America's collective head, he's in.

bush loves maniacs. He craves them like Rush craves hillbilly heroin. Surrounding himself with maniacs assures bush that he can't be crazy; after all, look at all these people in high positions who think just like he does.

thinks "separation of church and state" enabled Hitler to begin the Holocaust.

Here is a different viewpoint:

Hitler's Pope,  The Secret History of Pius XII,  by John Cornwell :

"In Hitler's Pope, award-winning journalist John Cornwell shows that Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII, was instrumental in negotiating an accord that helped the Nazis' rise to unhindered power and sealed the fate of the Jews in Europe. Drawing upon secret Vatican and Jesuit archives to which he had unprecedented access, Cornwell tells the tragic story of how narcissistic antipathy for the Jews and personal ambition combined to make Pius XII the most dangerous churchman in history. "
