Remember the name Walter Lippman.
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 09:46 PM by KlatooBNikto
He is the godfather of our servile, propagandistic Press. In his heyday after the war, he convinced Dean Acheson and John Foster Dulles that the best way to control and manipulate public opinion was to have "official" mouthpieces whose writings are given more weight than those of "noname" journalists. That essentially ensured a caste system that has grown even more powerful and sycophantic as the years have rolled by. James Reston, the Alsop brothers,Teddy White and others were the precursors of a whole new class of courtiers who thrive on "Access" to the powerful. In our own time, we have many examples of this species: George Will,Cokie Roberts,Robert Novak come to mind.

That they act as filters and trial balloon purveyors cannot be doubted. What is even more insidious is that they determine the topics and agenda that will be discussed either in the print media or on the air.

1. Ok Noam
But yeah, we have to create our own non-corporate media as an alternative to what is currently dominant. Everyone on DU should use and be supporting non-corporate media that is already out there.

3. You raise an issue I've kept wondering about
The strength of the anti-democratic forces in this country after World War II is a continuing astonishment to me. It ties in with the question of how people like the Dulles brothers and Averill Harriman were able to take control of US foreign policy despite their Nazi connections before the war, and how the CIA got away with smuggling all those old Nazis into this country.

I know the media had a lot to do with it. And so did the start of the Cold War. But neither of those really explains what was going on. I'm still looking for the real answers.

4. The Cold War
was started by Water Lippman. He coined the phrase.
As did Joseph Alsop with Back Lash and Winston Churchill with Iron Curtain,
