Need a new folk hero ? Check out these lyrics !!!
How Come?
by Ray Lamontagne
www.raylamontagne.com

(The cd is AWESOME, btw !)

People on the street now
Faces long and grim
Souls are growing heavy
And faith is growing thin
Fear - they gettin' stronger
Feel them on the rise
Hopelessness got some by the throat
You can see it in their eyes

I said how come ?
How come ?

Everybody on a shoestring
Everybody on hold
Everybody on an old jet plane
Crossin' their fingers and their toes
Government man spins his politics
Til they've got you pinned
Everybody trying to reach out to each other
Don't know where to begin

I said how come ?
How come ?

How come I can't tell the free world from a living hell ?
How come ?
How come all I see is a child of God in misery ?
I said, how come ?

The pistol as a prophet
Bullet some kind of lord and king
Pain is the only promise that the so called 'savior' gonna bring
Love can be a liar
Justice can be a thief
And freedom is an empty cup
From which everybody wanna drink

I said how come ?
How come I can't tell the free world from a living hell ?
How come ?
How come all I see is a child of God in misery ?

It's just man killin' man killin' man killin' man killin' man
I don't understand ...

1. or these....
Mine eyes have seen the orgy of the launching of the Sword;
He is searching out the hoardings where the stranger's wealth is stored;
He hath loosed his fateful lightnings, and with woe and death has scored;
His lust is marching on.

I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded him an altar in the Eastern dews and damps;
I have read his doomful mission by the dim and flaring lamps --
His night is marching on.

I have read his bandit gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my pretensions, so with you my wrath shall deal;
Let the faithless son of Freedom crush the patriot with his heel;
Lo, Greed is marching on!"

We have legalized the strumpet and are guarding her retreat;*
Greed is seeking out commercial souls before his judgement seat;
O, be swift, ye clods, to answer him! be jubilant my feet!
Our god is marching on!

In a sordid slime harmonious Greed was born in yonder ditch,
With a longing in his bosom -- and for others' goods an itch.
As Christ died to make men holy, let men die to make us rich --
Our god is marching on.

Mark Twain 1901

4. or these

Big John
Big John

Every mornning at the mine, you could see him arrive.
He stood 6 foot 6, weighed 245.
Kind of broad at the shoulders, narrow at the hip.
And everybody knew you didn't give no lip to Big John.

Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John

Nobody seemed to know where John called home
He just drifted into town and stayed all alone.
He didn't say much, kind of quiet and shy
And if you spoke at all, you'd just said hi to Big John.
Somebody said he came from New Orleans,
Where he got into a fight over a Cajun Queen.
And a crash and a blow from a huge right hand,
sent a Lousiana fella to the promise land.

Big John
Big John
Big bad John
Big John

Then came the day at the bottom of the mine,
when a timber cracked and men started crying.
Minors were praying, and hearts beat fast
and everybody thought they had breathed thier last
cept' John.
Through the dust and the smoke of this man made hell,
walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well.
Grabbed a sagging timber and gave out with a groan,
and like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone, Big John

Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John

And with all of his strength, he gave a mighty shove.
Then a minor yelled out, 'theres a light up above!'.
And 20 men scrambled from a 'would be' grave
now theres only one left down there to save, Big John.
With jacks and timbers, they started back down,
then came that rumble way down in the ground.
And as smoke and gas smelched out of that mine,
everybody knew it was the end of the line, for Big John.

Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John

Now they never re-opend that wortheless pit,
they just placed a marble stand in front of it.
These few words are written on that stand,
'At the bottom of this mine, lies one Hell of a man, Big John'

Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John.

5. KFOG In SF and The Mountain In Seattle...
...play this guy a ton. He's developing a big west coast following and has been consistently in the Top 100 in those 2 cities.

I work for a rival record company from the one he is on (RCA), and my boss had me do some research. Ray is a definite rising star who is now getting some serious notice, a guy who has something to say and still gets radio play.

Oh, and people I've spoken to who have met him say he's the real deal. The people at his label are very devoted to him.
