Cleveland, Ohio; Jeers...to the tiresome and certain to be futile efforts
A regular feature of the Friday editions of THE PLAIN DEALER on the OPINION page is a section called CHEERS AND JEERS. This section is a 'thumbs up' 'thumbs down' column created by the editorial board of this Northeast Ohio daily.
What follows is one of the JEERS found on page B8 of the Friday, December 3, 2004 edition.

JEERS...to the tiresome and certain-to-be-futile efforts of those who would recount Ohio's presidential votes until the punch cards are worn to shreds. Attention Jesse Jackson, the Green Party, the Liberation Party, People for the American Way, et al: George W. Bush won, John Kerry lost. The next presidential election will be in 2008. This one is over.

Members of the editorial board are as follows:
Alex Machaskee....President and Publisher
Douglas C. Clifton....Editor
Robert M. Long...Executive Vice President
Brent W. Larkin....Editorial Page Director

1. These guys are jerks
The Plain-Dealer is a very Republican paper in a very Democratic town. They deserve all the crap anyone wants to throw at them. They couldn't even print a decent article about their hometown Presidential candidate while he was running. They've hated Kucinich for years.

3. I despise that paper.
Unfortunately, it's Cleveland's only daily. Yet despite being the only newspaper, their circulation's in the shitter. Can't imagine why...

5. hubris
If the recount should overturn the results, these guys are going to be called out.

Let's get real journalists performing the watchdog function in our society, and shame these guys into doing the work or admitting they just sell ads wrapped around crap.

7. The "real" journalists
have all died or retired...with the exception of Obermann.

My journalism teacher must be spinning in his grave at what passes for reporting these days.

6. Reminder About The Pee Dee
This was the paper whose editorial board overwhelmingly wished to endorse Kerry -- but was prevented from doing so by its owner, a radical Serbian sympathiser who overruled the board and nearly wrote an editorial supporting Bush. Only a public airing of what happened in the board room stopped it -- and then they did the most gutless thing imaginable: refused to endorse anybody.

This is standard operating procedure for this rag. F'em.

8. Tell the CPD to cover today's meeting!
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 11:51 AM by IndyOp
If you are writing them to complain about the JEERS -- remind 'em to cover today's meeting. If the editorial board really did vote to endorse Kerry, maybe someone could be swayed to cover the meeting.

Cleveland, Ohio -

A public meeting will be held to discuss the presidential vote recount on
Sunday, December 5 at 2:30 pm, at the First United Methodist Church, located at Euclid and East 30th, in Cleveland, Ohio.

At the Cleveland meeting, representatives of the recount project will present information about the recount processes and timelines. Volunteers will meet the regional and county recount leaders, and form county teams for breakout sessions. The Cleveland meeting will focus on activities in seven counties of Northeast Ohio - Cuyahoga, Lake, Medina, Summit, Geauga, Portage, and Lorain. The Northeast Ohio recount leader, Richard Reinoehl, will be on hand to answer questions.

Northeast Ohio's efforts are part of a state-wide recount of presidential ballots which was filed for by members of the Green and Libertarian parties, because of discrepancies in Ohio's election results.

9. Here's my letter
Here's a little lesson in democracy for the recount bashers. Find a basher and ask them to make a $10 bill from a handfull of singles. Only give them $7. See if they count it. See if they say anything. Deny the problem. See if they ask for a recount. Tell them you already counted it. See if they ask for yet another recount. Ask them how many times do they need to count it? Tell them they are wasting your time and time is money. If they persist, and they will, tell them to get over it and move on. After all, it's just money, it's not like they spilled blood to get it.
