1. Every poll I've seen.... |
|
...indicates that the majority of DUers are something other than Christian. The atheists do not form a majority, either. It's a tender topic, but I think a little mutual respect could go a long way. Our goals are the same, so why do we have to snipe at each other?
I don't particularly care who started it; let's all end it.

And I am thankfully to the admin for it. I have no desire to piss people off by talking about things that make them uncomfortable.
So if it really gets too you perhaps you should tell the admin to move them all to over there.
But on the other hand it sh-owes that people do want to air this all out, and it could have a good effect of calling a truce between those that do and do not believe in something that has no bearing on the fact that we are all progressives with the same goal.

7. yes and this is a general discussion forum |
|
so if people want to discuss the religious issue and why Dems may or may not be winning the "morals" war--why shouldn't they? those who don't want to discuss this can hide the topic or not respond.

25. May I point out to you... |
|
..that the majority of these GD threads are not due to Christians forcing the issue in this forum, but because of threads on political topics pertaining to religion (such as attempts to teach creationism) which are then turned into "let's bash all Christians, and let any progressive Christians remaining here know how hated they and their religion are by the rest of us" flame-fests by the non-religious folk present?

When was the last time an atheist ran wearing his/her religion on his/her sleeve.
We have to be in the closet about it even in our own party.

5. When did we stop being inclusive and tolerant? |

And when did being Liberal become exclusive of those who have Faith?
Do I have to be agnostic now to be considered a Liberal?

6. no, you have to be a godless heathen |
|
anything else is apostasy.
/sarcasm
i don't think there is exclusion, i think the problem is that persons of faith get really thin-skinned when confronted with non-believers who don't want religion in their face 24-7 or is somebody makes a criticism of religion.

13. I am not thin-skinned, especially dealing with Rethug fundies |
|
but I think that there is room under our tent to allow God to be discussed without those who do not believe becoming combative.
If I believed in the great god Bazooka, lord of all things explosive, and started a poll asking if discussion of his powers was inappropriate to the 'greater plan' for Liberals, how many of you would be pissed that I felt it important enough to discuss?

16. can i ask you a serious question? |
|
and i'm not trying to bait you, you can pm me if you like. but what constitutes combative?
i understand that a believer and a non-believer are coming from a wholly different set of presuppositions: as an atheist, i assume that god is an absurdity or a falsehood - something that does not objecively exist. a concept similar to santa claus or the easter bunny.
although i can't blame somebody for believing in god, it makes no sense to me. in fact, some of the best examples of humanity i have found among believers seem to think of god abstractly, not as a living god.
do statements like this seem combative? even if it is what i truly think?

19. I think that this entire topic is absurd |
|
It shows intolerance, period. I have tolerance for everyone's views, but I cannot understand how blocking discussion of a subject that is important to some is beneficial to us all.
How would anyone feel if the word gay was substituted for the word God? How much outrage would there be in suggesting that those with a specific befief or sexual preference were denied the right to debate here?
I've been here a long time (in DU years), and I am astonished at the changes in attitude and intolerance that is creeping into these forums.:grr:

however, given the fervent religiosity consuming this country, i guess some people are getting a little impatient with having god thrust in their face more often than not.
is that intolerant?

24. If a thread offends you or does not interest you |
|
just ignore it. Isn't that the purpose for which we were founded? Is censuring thread titles now appropriate if one doesn't like the thread?
My 'religiosity' isn't fervent, and if you think that it is consuming this country, you've bought the bridge the Reich-wing media has been selling you. Joe Six-Pack, who stupidly voted to keep Shrub in the People's House is as religious as my dog. The scumbags at FAUX would have you believe otherwise.
Maybe that needs to be discussed here at a later time. Right now, I'm going to deliver some dinner to some very needy folks.
Catch ya later.

If someone calls me stupid or ignorant for believing in God without knowing anything about me, I will defend myself and I will also challenge that person to prove that they are any more knowledgeable than I am. This applies to the religious fundies as well who will attack me for being Catholic. At my school, I have dealt with both anti-Catholics religious nuts and the militant atheists and I despise both groups equally.

That would be a point of concern. I am a Christian also. I would be offended if someone called me stupid or ignorant. I don't see a lot of non religious people doing this. They seem to be coming from the position that they think religious people believe in something that doesn't exist. They think that belief is silly. I don't think most of those who agree with this position that post here believe that the others here are stupid of silly. They think that this particular opinion is silly.
I think "reality shows" are stupid and silly. I will not watch them. I hope those here who like to watch Survivor and Fear Factor don't think that I hold them in contempt because I feel there is no redeeming value in these type of shows. I hope that those who hold these shows in high esteem would not take it as a blanket condemnation of them as people because I think that they are wasting their time on these shows. I try to take people's views as a whole. If someone's world outlook serves to better things, I have little concern whether they agree with mine or not. I don't see a lot of atheists and agnostics attacking people for their beliefs, they just don't share them. If they don't believe, it would be ingnorant and stupid for them not to say so. I would listen to what they say and see if it affects my position. It hasn't so far.
If someone were to say that that they that Jim Morrison was not dead but lives in the basement of the WH and is really running the country, and they used as the only evidence a single book, or series of books without testable evidence in them as the evidence of this, and that they weren't joking but really believed it, I think most here would think they are irrational in this. That wouldn't lead me to discount everything they said if I found that other things they said had meaning to me. I come from the position regarding faith that it doesn't matter if it can be proven or not, or if others feel that there is no logical reason to hold the view that God exists. It feels right to me, just like love feels right to me, and peace feels right to me, and charity and forgiveness feel right to me. I don't worry whether those who are with me on those arrived there the same way I did. In fact, I would rather that some arrived there without faith. It would indicate to me that these things are more likely to be universal ideals if those who reject my faith also hold those things as essential ideals.
Peace.

20. The normal counter argument to censorship is ........ |
|
...... if you don't like the show or book or movie, don't read or watch. Change the channel.
My browser colors visited links red and unread links blue.
I have more blue than red links.
Self censorship.
No need to impose anything more here, dontcha think?
