Can anyone explain this?
Why is there public outrage over Janet Jackson's breast being exposed for a split second on national TV, and Nicollete Sheridan dropping her towel in a football locker room - but no public outrage over 1200 Americans dead in the dirt of Iraq? What is wrong with this society? Everyone got suitably upset over the death of 3000 people in the World Trade Center attack, but where is the national outrage and mourning for the 1200 additional Americans killed in the "war on terror"? This is 7 times as many who died in the Oklahoma City bombings, and that was a big deal, with a monument etc. Why isn't virtually anyone even talking about 1200 American deaths in Iraq? Only passing references to it appear in the newspapers and occasionally on TV news, yet they can cut down whole forests for the newsprint to print the latest developments in the Scott Peterson trial - and who the hell is he anyway, why does he matter more than 1200 Americans dead in Iraq? Do Americans truly not care about war deaths?

into believeing that our troops are fighting for our "freedom"...last time I checked the ones who are trying to take our freedoms away are the same ones who sent our troops off to Iraq...

8. Yeah right!!
I keep hearing how we should support our troops, who are fighting for 'US', our freedoms etc. This seems to be the catch phrase lately. Frankly, I see no correlation whatsoever to my freedoms being threatened in Iraq. I find our freedomes are being threatened here at home though!

Still trying to find out what we are doing there in the first place. What IS the mission for these troops. What exactly are they putting their lives at stake for?

I know this sounds extreme, but it's my opinion that if we just walk away NOW, the problem will end in Iraq. Let the split into several factions, let them determine things. WE are the problem, not the insurgents!

3. I don't know, I was watching one of the morning talking head shows
and they listed the names and ages of the 35 troops killed this week. That's 35 families who are not gonna have a happy xmas.

Moral Values. It's all I can do to keep myself from keying those big-assed SUV's with "Support our Troops" ribbon magnets every time I walk through a parking lot here in Jesusland. If there is a hell, Satan is stoking up the fires for a lot of us.

names and ages of the troops killed.

It was incredibly sad...so many young people.

7. No, penii are scarier: The gun is good. Zardoz: The penis is evil.

Think about it, you never ever see penii on TV, that would be the end of the network. Boobs and towels are good for "controversy" and that helps with ratings...

Of course, the words do seem to have some eerie relevance to this society as conceived by the reactionaries in power.

It's about morality. And morality, to our great surprise, is only about sex. Stealing someones life savings or pension is, is guess, totally ok. Don't feel bad i didn't get the memo either but it's obviously been circulated among many americans.

and BTW welcome to DU :hi:

15. you are confusing public outrage with media manufactured outrage
a small group of right wing rabble rousers gets all of this media attention, it becomes sensationalized. it has nothing to do with actual "public" opinion.

All crap.

if we the people were out in the streets and unified and vocal, the media would eventually HAVE to take notice....but you are correct that the media manufactures red herring outrage to keep peoples eyes off the ball.

22. People are outraged, but not unified or very vocal.
The media have won, in a sense. I've mentioned wanting to protest and the reaction I've got -- from even sympathetic people -- has been, What are you going to protest? Democracy? People voted for Bush, they must like him, like the war, etc!

And I mention voter fraud, they say, So where's the proof?

It's coming!I say.

So here we are. A lot of us are just -- still -- trying to figure out the best thing to do at this point. I want to run screaming in the streets, but is that worthwhile, when it's just me alone in my little town? (BTW, I've done that before, been one of two people protesting some white-supremacists. Got arrested. End of that.)

The outrage is real, it's huge. What's NOT huge yet is a consensus about the best tactic.

Many, MANY Dems I know think we should be looking at 2006 and getting our "message" refined.

I disagree, but it's hard to form a coherent argument right now.

25. Personally, I am of the opinion that we protest first.
We have extremely strong suspicions about the fraud. We know some of what was done, which is illegal. We have strong statistical indication of what else we should be looking for.

The Ukrainians dont have nearly as much 'proof' as we do, the Yugoslavs didnt.

One unfortunate item I believe is that both the Ukraine and Yugoslavia among others were at least helped along partially by USA, CIA, NED interference. We are being stifled by the same government and media manipulation to not protest and to accept it.

Im for protest first because protest brings visibility, leading to public acknowledgment, this would bring the media and the investigations.

24. Here's the truth
Most Americans - this Board excepted - don't care that there's a war on or that 1300 soldiers are dead and 18,000 are wounded.

They think "I'm glad it's not me."

Or - "they signed up for it."

Or - "we are kicking arab ass."

Or - "President Bush will take care of it."

Or - "Gee, that's too bad."

28. Simple, SIN
A nude body is sinful to them, they hate the female body particulary. They protect the fetus, unless it is a incest fetus, then abortion is okay with them.

To put it all simple like, look at the following comparison:

WAR + DEATH + KILLING + VIOLENCE + XTIAN DOMINIONIST FACISIM= GOOD

SEX + WOMEN'S RIGHTS + PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ELSE= VERY BAD, SOMEONE MUST DIE!
