Ed Bradley interviews Bob Dylan (60-Minutes)
What a riveting segment. But baby-faced Bob is showing his 63 years. Dylan has been nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature (lyrics). Hope he gets it.

Born Robert Zimmerman, he changed his name when he began to perform in NYC. He kept the "Bob", but picked up "Dylan." Was this in deference to the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas (who died in NYC in 1953 from an overdose of bourbon)?

Dylan Thomas, whoever he was.

4. You are kidding, right?
"Dylan Thomas, whoever he was" is a line from a Simon and Garfunkle song. You knew that, right?

7. No, I didn't!
But I did think that at the least - you were in for some major treats!

3. Very few make it through that kind of fame...
..unscathed. I saw a man who had been running from his fame for so long that he is unable or unwilling to entirely understand the reasons for that fame in the first place.

Of course, he could have been just playing with Ed Bradley.

5. First interview in 20+ years.
I don't think he was playing with Ed Bradley. He might have used Ed, to a degree, but that is a tough call for a better critic than I. I think Dylan put it up front. He almost stopped his career, feeling spent and, perhaps, superfluous. Then, I think, he realized who the fuck he is. Bob Dylan. He is a franchise that has never been infringed upon (to put in crass capitalistic terms). Dylan is too unique for words. I know that. You know that. Ed Bradley knows that. And I think, finally, poor old Bob knows that. He is not comfortable with his celebrity status, and I understand his pain there.

15. His book is great and reflects exactly
what you said in your post. I can't wait for the next two Dylan chronicles.

9. He was as always, an enigma, depressed, negative and in denial
about who he is to his public vs. who he is to himself. On top of all that, he's extremely funny.

17. first TV interview since Nightline in '85
Nearly 20 years... he was interviewed on Nightline back when "Live Aid" was being prepared, "We Are The World" was recorded, and his "Empire Burlesque" album was released.

18. Ed Bradley could have asked more interesting questions
unless Dylan controlled the interview. Regardless, it was a pleasure to actually understand Dylan's sentences.

19. I think what I liked most was his humility
Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 10:49 AM by SiouxJ
there are far less talented people in the world who are just full of themselves. He has every right to have an absolutely enormous ego but he's very nonchalant about it. There's something very appealing (sexy even) about someone with so much talent who remains humble.
