Cable TV:
Under Top Contributors to Federal Candidates and Parties

I went over to opensecrets.org, because I've been thinking about a thread I saw here about a week ago that said suggested we should drop cable or be part of the problem. Of those who agreed with this statement, one group seemed to be suggesting this route as a protest against cable news. Another group suggested that patronizing cable was giving money to the GOP.

So, I looked up my local cable company to see what indeed they gave and to whom.

My cable company was #4 on the list of top cable tv donors. They're numbers broke down as such.

Time Warner
$440,302
Dem 85%
Rep 14%

(The Center for Responsive Politics is responsible for this info)

The industry as a whole has been shifting Dem since 2000 in their donations. I don't know why.

Mine was one of the better Dem donors. YES Network was the best, with 100% Dem donorship. Also high in Dem donorship were IAC/Interactive Corp with 95%, Viacom with 95%, Fox Cable Networks with 93% (!!WTF!!), and Discovery Communications with 86%

On the Repub side, the worst were Jones Media Networks with 100% Repub donorship, Simmons Communications with 100%, Corning Cable Systems with 100%, Bresnan Communications with 98%, Unitedglobal.com with 97% and New Heritage Assoc with 96%.

I'll try linking to the chart. We'll see if it works.

So this is why I say -- I'm keepin' my cable.

2. I'm getting rid of my cable.
Everything on TV is either so right wing or else so trashy that I barely even watch it anymore anyway. And I don't care which party they give more money to, they are just a conduit of RW propaganda from what I can see.

I don't judge anyone for making a different choice though.

3. That's cool
Having just discovered digital, I'm grooving on having three different kinds of C-Span, actual videos on MTV (plus Fuse) and digital music. Plus I'm addicted to TLC. I don't have any energy to fix up myself or my home, but I do like watching others do it. :D

4. Keeping mine, too...
or I wouldn't have any TV. We have too many mountains between us and the stations and too much distance, here in Ventura County, CA. Besides, there are people who lean in our direction, like Keith Olberman on MSNBC. Don't miss the Sundance channel if you can get it. For 2 months before the election they gave us a tv version of the Al Franken Show, and ran every anti-Bush documentary they could find. And, don't forget that we couldn't get Sponge Bob without it!
