Why Do We Think That The Insurgents Will Stop After The
election?

Why would they? I guess I don't see the logic here.

3. Thank you! Most of us knew this war was a really bad idea from day one
It's a bad idea that just keeps getting worse. It never had any connection to reality so I don't expect any rationality to come about any time soon.

5. First of all
most of the "insurgents" fighting now are just Iraqui citizens trying to get their country back. If this invasion ever ends, I imagine some poll-taker will give us stats on how many ordinary Iraquis tried to defend their homes and families, or took up a gun because their home was bombed.
The government lies!

4. They are resistance fighters, not insurgents
But you are right.

We are persistently told that there will be more violence in the run-up to some big date. First, we were told to expect more violence in the run-up to the handover of "sovereignty" to Iraq, then it was the date of the elections. I imagine the next one will be the run-up to the swearing in of whatever government is elected, or maybe the run-up to Saddam's trial, or maybe the second anniversary of the start of the war.

6. Well...
It could get interesting. I think that not delaying the elections when they were asked to was a huge mistake as it means that many will now consider boycotting the elections and are less likely to accept the results. But, it's also looking more and more likely that the government the US hand picked will lose the election and the religious parties will take over. So, the US may be asked to leave or may find itself in a country where the democratically elected government is part of the insurgency.

8. Elections will be nearly impossible
My bf had a class session recently led by two members of an NGO working in Iraq. Estimates are that they need 150,000 trained citizen-workers to coordinate and operate the election. As of November they had 7,000. Yes, with only three zeros. And that doesn't even address the issue of how little of the country is secure enough for people to leave their homes to vote.

It's pretty much guaranteed that no LEGITIMATE election will occur in January. So, the Iraqis will hate us even more and the freedom fighters will work even harder at guerilla and urban warfare.

7. I've been saying this to people from the beginning
And this is exactly why we should've never invaded Iraq. It is a lose/lose situation.

Even if you are lucky enough to have successful elections, you are still in a position where if you pull out civil war could start, and uit would be looked at, and would be, the United States fault.

However, on the other hand, if you stay the insurgents will not stop, more Americans soldiers will die, more innocent Iraqi's will die, anti-Americanism will continue to spread like wildfire and our spending in Iraq will continue to sky rocket.

9. Not the first time.
The violence was supposed to stop after the capture of SH.
