DLC Calls on Kofi Annan to Resign?? (WTF??)
Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 03:46 PM by tritsofme
The Price of Credibility

As we argued last week, one of America's most urgent foreign policy needs is to retool international organizations and traditional alliances to provide collective security against the global threat of jihadist terrorism. The United Nations can and should be a central part of this new collective security system, but only if the organization is systematically reformed to serve that purpose.

Unfortunately, the United Nations' credibility has been steadily eroded by its own misdeeds, with a burgeoning scandal over its incompetent and sometimes corrupt management of the Iraq oil-for-food program being the most damaging example. Last week it was reported that the son of U.N. secretary general Kofi Annan received a series of payments from a Swiss firm that won a lucrative contract under the oil-for-food program. This development has fed growing doubts that the United Nations will be able to own up to its problems or reform its operations so long as Annan remains at the helm...................

<SNIP>

Annan's intransigence should not deter the Senate subcommittee on investigations or other congressional investigations. Volcker can hardly be expected to conduct a thorough and unbiased inquiry into a scandal in which the U.N. secretary general and his son are involved. The world deserves a full and thorough accounting of what transpired. The sooner the United Nations can get past this matter, the sooner it can get back to the important business of making itself an effective instrument for collective security against terrorism, failed states, and acts of genocide, a goal that Annan has strongly supported. The secretary general should place this critical mission ahead of his personal interests, and step aside. Given his own lack of credibility on the oil-for-food program, this step is the price Annan must pay to help restore the U.N.'s credibility, and to salvage his legacy as secretary general.

Why the hell is DNC agreeing with some idiot neocon in the Senate?

No wonder we lose elections...

3. The DLC goal
is to become a 2nd republican party (so we effectively have a one party state). They love the neocon dream of world conquest. Their statements are always against people like Dean and of course, Michael Moore because a DLC member (in my eyes) is a lying republican, that's all.

6. Maybe those idiots...
think the ridiculous oil for food claims have merit. If they're stupid enough to think that, do we really have any hope of ever being able to help them?

10. This isn't too surprising.
The U.N. HAS to wash itself of the oil for food scandal before the U.N. takes on Bush. As long as the oil for food scandal is there, Bush will continue to use it as a means for undermining the United Nations. Once the oil for food scandal is wiped off the U.N. record, Bush won't be able to discredit the actions the U.N. takes. Furthermore, Kofi Annan really hasn't taken a stance against Bush, Sudan or the fraudulent elections in Russia. Basically, he's a weak leader for the U.N. and the U.N. needs someone more hardline about international security and human rights.

Personally, I'd like to see Declan Budd appointed as the U.N.'s Secretary General. Currently, he's the President of the Law Reform Commission in Ireland and he's also a commissioner of Charitable Donations and Bequests for Ireland. From what I can tell, this guy's experienced in International Law, heavily involved with human rights organizations and he's from Ireland, as in not from France, Germany or any of the other countries involved with the oil for food scandal.

We need credible people who can attack this administration's policies without being swept up in some dink and dunk scandal.

21. Right.
The DLC wants someone who will really "stand up to Bush".
The DLC is concerned about Sudan.
The DLC is concerned about human rights.

Please.

Granted, Annan is not as effective as I would like him to be, but at least he provides a counterpoint to the imperial fascists.

The only acceptable DLC/neo-con alternative to Annan will be a boot-licking yes man.

How many times do we need to see the end of this particular movie?

11. It's time for us to start a DLC watch to start educating people
about them in time for the 2008 fight.

Screw the DLC and the horses they ride on.
