Received my Selective Service papers in the mail today
The papers are an application to serve on the local Selective Service Board, i.e. the people who select those to be drafted in case of a draft. I'm applying for it and hope I get on. Are any other DUers applying for it?

I did not know you could do that
Please share with us.

I have a feeling Republicans need to have their kids drafted more often, particularly the children of the Repug politicians.

7. I f u think
its gunna be any different than during the last occupation war your kidding yourself. People with money will always get out of serving in those wars. Its the nature of this country, and always will be until the "common" people take it back.

2. I have also received my Selective Service application, am
struggling picturing myself sending anyone off to war but don't want to see draft boards letting those who have rich powerful families getting out of service while those with less power go. I saw too much of that during the Vietnam war.

3. Already Did
I've been a member of my local area draft board since February of this year. I received a certificate of appointment and an ID card.

So, what area are you in?

I'm in Tucson.

6. How do you go about getting on the draft board, anyway?
And do you have to have military experience to apply?

16. No, it's more like who goes and who doesn't go
Mrs. gratuitous wrapped up 20 years on the draft board back in 2002, which is the maximum time you can serve. Her standard unanswerable challenge to the American Legion folks who almost invariably wanted to ship some scared pee-less 18-year-old overseas (these were hypothetical training scenarios) was, "Knowing how badly and to what lengths this hypothetical recruit has gone to avoid service, do you really want your son to have this guy watching his back?"

20. I'm already sworn in
I volunteered many months ago, but I never thought they'd take me given my activist background - and the fact that I myself refused to register in 1975.

But take me they did. I met with a nice lady named Major Ortiz who interviewed me and administered my oath of office. She said that the next step would be a few days of training, but i haven't heard from them since.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they contacted me soon, though....

I just want to find out what the fuck they're up to, so I jumped on it when the call for volunteers was posted on the Net. Of course, it was quickly withdrawn, as you'll recall, but I found the PDF of the application at The Memory Hole.

If it ever comes to sending people off to die in a useless war I'll probably resign, but then it might be nice to help prevent some future chickenhawks from wriggling out of their "patriotic duty."

All I know is that if they'd take someone like me they must be in too much of a hurry to do any proper vetting.
