Sen. John McCain has threatened to propose legislation that would override the drug-testing provisions in baseball's collective bargaining agreement. Selig says there should be more frequent testing and harsher penalties for positive tests than called for in the labor contract signed by owners and players two years ago.
"If we cannot resolve this issue privately, I gladly will accept whatever help is offered by Senator McCain to achieve our ultimate goal," Selig said in a statement Monday.
What is it too much to use the police and FBI to use the current laws to arrest those found buying this stuff? Well of course it is. No one wants their star player in jail. Am I the only one out there that sees this steroid issue as a wedge issue used by the owners to put a chink in the baseball union. I personally hope every MLB player mails McCain a free urine sample for him to test.

2. By any means necessary.... |

do I hope they find a way to rid the game of performance enhancing drugs and the suspicion of performance enhancing games.
I love baseball, and I cherish the records that so many worked so hard to attain.
Hank Aaron is a hero of mine for several reasons. Barry Bonds is going to break his record using a body that is stronger, and recovers quicker from aches and pains, thanks to illegal, unethical performance enhancing drugs.
There's no telling how many of his home runs are illegitimate, but I bet it would be more than the average MLer hits in a lifetime.
Baseball and its records, to me, is a part of the public trust, and I'm glad John McCain is going to try to do something to protect it.
I hope he's successful.

3. I don't see how the union has a leg to stand on... |
|
on this issue. I would guarantee that 70%+ of its members would be all for a tough, meaningful testing policy.
A real policy would balance the playing field back towards the guys who refuse to take the steroids, and relieve them of the temptation to juice up their bodies in order to become more competitive (like they expect other ballplayers to be doing).
Donald Fehr does not represent the union as a whole; he only represents whatever number of superstars might have the opportunity in the future to sign a megabucks contract with the Yankees.
And to call the MLBPA a union, and give it that sort of credence here, is an affront to the Teamsters and UAW and all the other real unions that are necessary for men and women to earn an honest living.

8. Well, I'm with McCain on this one. |
|
I'm not much of a baseball fan, the NFL is my game, but I don't care what game it is, none of these players shouldn't be taking enhancement drugs! TS if you can't make it without them.
Someone asked why they need congress to step into this mess...why not just use law enforcement to arrest those who are buying/using illegal substances. Because there's enough $$ involved that no one will ever be caught!

9. Democrats need to take up these issues as pastimes. |
|
The Democrats have to work to promote legislation on issues like this. It'll show we stand for good causes.
