The 20th century was the American century, the 21st will be the Chinese
All the factors are in play. For a repeat of the fall of the British and the rise of America. The only superpower at the beginning of the 20th century got bogged down several wars and conflicts and could no longer hold onto their power. A country that had a larger population, stayed away from war, and had a quickly moving technology sector became the dominant player.

Is our country destined to become like the Soviet Union? To compete with the Chinese, will we put all our money into weaponry to put of the appearance of keeping up? Only time will tell...

1. As George Carlin said
(I paraphrase), "Keep laughing, but China's gonna win it all."

They own us.

3. My hope is that we are knocked out of our role as superpower
It would be nice if we are taken out of the superpower role without totally wrecking our economy and democracy. Maybe then we won't spend as much on weapons and defense and we can focus on real issues such as health-care, education, etc.

4. Yes, but I think the question is
will psychopaths like those that are in power today ALLOW that to happen?

Who can see someone like *Bush just sitting back and letting it happen?

Something tells me he, or another like him, will begin WW4.

THAT is what scares me.

Sort of like a sick abuser in an ending relationship.

If I can't have you, no one will.

Maybe I am completely wrong...

At least I hope I am.

I guess I consider the cold war to be WW3.

But you are correct.

I will drop the WW3 thing.

Edited for content.

5. "Glass half full" view
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 01:16 AM by joefree1
Like the Soviet Union before China is taking advantage of their slave labor force to become an economic power. However lack of freedom and corruption will prove to be a glass ceiling to their hopes of being a superpower.

This century will soon belong to the European Union as a center of technology and innovation. Already America is experiencing a brain drain to Europe because of our reactionary laws and government.

Of course the neo-cons will threaten the EU but will back down when the EU threatens to close all Mac Donald's, Wal Marts, and Burger Kings (soon to be our only source of income.)

6. I hope that you are right about China,
but direct parallels can't be drawn with the Soviets. The Soviets practiced a type of economic isolationism, where China seems to be not only deeply involved in our economy, but using our own economic peccadilloes against us.

They're practicing economic ju-jitsu, and we're their tackling dummy!

7. My guess is China, India and maybe EU
China and India and Asia.I say maybe EU because they have some of our problems. They are not teaching science or it is falling way behind with Univ. shutting off some of those dept. And often India and China are sending people in to the dept that are still going. But that maybe only Brits I have not read that about other EU countries that have very good education. Their birth rate is also low. I do think we are well passed our top now and going down. Military is still rich but for how long? When the roads etc, fall apart people get sick of feeding the military. My guess is the Internet will also be in the works to shut down or control to ave. people in this term. Bush wants no one that speaks against him.

9. That's an interesting thought
It would be great if the Europe Union was in control. I just don't know if they have the manpower to keep up with China and India.

11. And bear in mind that the Chinese are not bogged down in
the terrible inefficiencies of religionism. Religion squanders an unacceptable amount of human resources on counter productive activities. Further, the religionists are infected with cognitive disorders that will ultimately have fatal consequences.

12. I heard a panel of gurus say...
...that in this century Americans will be migrating to China for work, just as so many people of all ethnicities have traveled to America for generations.

13. 1.3 billion people and strict population controls invite immigrants?
I'm not sure how that works. Did they address those issues at all?
