...how did you feel about growing up Catholic. Especially attending a Catholic school, when things would come up about homosexuality?
Did it make your squirm in your chair? Did it make you angry? Did you stand up and say something?
I'm asking, because I have been having a conversation with Sapph about nuns, and this question just kinda dawned on me.
Thanks in advance to those who take part in this thread. :)

Not once in eight years. I didn't realize how much the church hated my kind until I was long out of parochial school (and when that happened, I left the church).
But I expect Catholics younger than myself have had the issue come up. I'll be interested in their replies.

Maybe they thought you were too young to be "corrupted" by the evil lesbians?

It just wasn't on our radar. We were, believe it or not, actually encouraged to discuss "moral" issues of the day, openly -- but those issues mostly boiled down to the morality of war (Vietnam), race relations (it was the 1960s), government accountability (Watergate, natch) and other, "broader" issues.
I think if it had been an issue at the time, it would have come up -- but we're talking 1967 to 1975 with my parochial-school experience, during which (while definitely pre- and post-Stonewall-era) LGBT issues were completely removed from our experience.
(I will mention, however, just for your pleasure, that including myself I know at least four of us out of a class of 36 ended up as queer as can be, and three of us are known LGBT activists today. That's well over the 10% average... and doesn't include the three or four more I suspect turned out just as queer as I did. :) )

I was being sarcastic when I said it. Kind of a stab at the church and all.

Oh well that is interesting. Thanks for sharing that.
Are these activist anyone I would have heard of?
On edit: typo fix. And this poist just posted in triplicate. LOL

7. Not so famous as, say, Cheryl Jacques... |

...but if you keep an eye on gay & straight periodicals (which I know you do), their names come up again and again and again and...
I'm just waiting for a couple of low-profile homos -- heirs to some VERY rich corporate families out here in Calif. -- to come out completely, and take up the gauntlet. (Don't worry, they're actually lefties, who vote correctly and all that -- but just haven't taken the plunge into activism yet. Calling the Del Monte fam-- oops, didn't mean to say that out loud! LOL)
That's the fun part of having grown up in a super-affluent community (to which my family really didn't belong): you get to know who's who, and, of greater interest, who's what. ROFL

Sapphocrat, I know that some *people* express hate toward homosexuals, but Catholic theology does not. Fine line, I know, but important.

I was just being lazy / using shorthand. The church doesn't even officially condemn us (let alone hate us) for being gay -- we're condemned only for following our inherent, God-given nature. ;)
(I think Sister Fatima was the only one who actually hated anybody -- but that's another story for another time. LOL)

...before I head off to bed.
I really am very curious about this, and am looking forward to seeing some answers. I do however realize that the time I posted this for me, a lot of you were in bed. :)
