satan rears his/her ugly head at school talent show
I was standing next to a father at a local school talent show last week.

Ten bands, soloists and duets played music ranging from Santana, Green Day, ABBA, Mozart, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Switchfoot, Bach, etc. (as well as many original songs). The students were allowed to gather at the edge of the stage to watch, dance, but not "mosh". When bumping would begin there were several parents there to calm them down. It was a wonderful night of young musicians getting to play to around 400 people. No problems.

I loved it! He hated it. My daughter played in one of the bands, and the father next to me had a daughter in one of the classical trios that played. At the end of the show the father next to me was furious and planned on presenting a complaint at the next school board meeting. He said, "the entire evening was a battle between good and evil. I sensed christ in the room at times and satan in the room at times. These kids are being pulled, like a tug of war, from christ and back to him," and, "it is so easy to see when the devil rears his ugly head and I'm not having it."

I plan to be at that board meeting to express my enjoyment of a fun evening with kids just having a blast playing music they love to hundreds of kids that loved all of it.

This man scared me!

4. he opposed the "rock" bands being included
hated the sophomoric rendition of AC/DC's TNT by the freshman band (I loved it)

I think the school pepeband plays Queen's "We will Rock You" quite frequently.

Simply metaphors for the things he likes and can control and the things he hates and cannot control.

What are we to do?
I think an exorcism is in order here, we must drive the demons from the children before they are consumed.

7. Geez
I have such eclectic tastes in music, at any given time I have satanic and Christlike music in rotation on my CD player. And yet I feel no struggle of any kind. Maybe there's something wrong with me. Perhaps I need more agnostic music. And I know I don't have enough Janeist music. Damn, I'm feeling left out because I don't have a music struggle! I want a music struggle, too!

I'm always amazed at the hills upon which people choose to die. Here we are agonizing over vote irregularities and the future of our entire furking country... and this man is going to the wall over music that doesn't (often) contain clavichords and lutes. Maybe the heavy throbbing base of the rock music is making his groin area want to undulate. Or something. I'm sure it's something like that.

Tell your daughter to rock on! As Jesus said, the geezers will always be with us.

11. WTF is it about fundies???
Man, I hate how fundies label anything they are *uncomfortable* with as the spawn of Satan.

"Gee this is music I do not like, therefore it must be inspired by the devil"

They seem to spend more god damned time looking for the devil, how could they possibly ever *see* God?

33. Reminds me of a Petra tune...
Judas' Kiss. The opening line is a backwards spoken vocal that precedes the opening guitar riff. Played backwards (thus forwards) it says "What are ya lookin' for the devil for when ya oughta be lookin for the Lord?"

They released that during the peak of the "backward masking" stupidity.

18. The African Drumbeat terrifies the Wallflower Order.
Ishmael Reed's wonderful novel Mumbo Jumbo recounts happenings early in the last century, when "Jes' Grew"--the dance spirit--threatened the very whiteness of US culture. Here's the complaint of The Wallflower Order:

Look at them! Just look at them!
throwing their hips this way, that
way while I, my muscles, stone,
the marrow of my spine, plaster, my
back supported by decorated paper,
stand here as goofy as a Dumb Dora
Lord, if I can't dance, No one shall.

The beat is at the heart of all blues, jazz & rock. Plus most pop & country--they finally allowed drums on stage at the Grand Ole Opry.

The Da Vinci Code became a best seller recycling various stories about ancient secrets. But Reed's novel presents a really refreshing look at the what lies beneath civilization as we know it--including Ancient Egypt, Western Occultism & Voodoo--in a Harlem Renaissance setting.

(Those who dwell where African & American sprits were allowed to survive by getting lost in the crowd of saints know about the the Lord of the Crossroads. In Haiti, he's Baron Samedi--a tricksy fellow, indeed. In the black & white Calvinist world, the only "other" is Satan.)

31. Does his daughter play the violin?
If she does, then she should be stoned, for the violin is the devil's instrument and nothing good can come of playing it. At least that's what they were saying two hundred years ago.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

36. Then he should have voted for Al Gore in 2000
Because in the 80s, Tipper Gore began the movement to put warning labels on rock albums with explicit lyrics.

I wonder, did anyone do a cover of Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil" which you can point out to this dad that Jesus reportedly did when he told Satan to get behind him.
