I just listened to a great piece on
AAR talking about the 20th anniversary of Bhopal and Union Carbide.
The story was that a parody site was set up wherein Dow Chemical (which now owns the former UC) would finally issue an apology for this man-made disaster and the incredible misery it caused in Bhopal in 1984.
BBC was duped into asking the parody site for a comment on the anniversary. The guys went to do an interview, that aired several times, in which they aoplogized for the disaster and made a startling announcement: The company will be liquidated at a value of 12 Billion dollars and all the money would be given to the Indian victims as compensation.
But the story was later corrected and the reality remains that each victim got a cash payment of $500. "Plenty good for an indian" the UC spokesperson said.
