White House Press Briefing with Scott McClellan "Scottie & Me".....
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 10:50 AM by ElsewheresDaughter
Scottie & Me
(formerly known as Ari & I)
White House Press Briefing with Scott McClellan
Monday, December 6, 2004 - 1:00 pm
by Russell Mokhiber

Mokhiber: Scott, on the Middle East - many evangelical Christians in the United States are supporting right-wing Jews in Israel who want to rebuild the temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. They (Evangelical Christians) believe this is a prerequisite for Christ's return to earth.

They believe that when Christ returns to earth - they call this the rapture - he will take back with him the true believers. And the rest - the non believers - Jews, Muslims - will be left behind to face a violent death here on earth.

My question is, as a born again Christian, does the President support efforts to rebuild the temple on the Temple Mount?

Scott McLellan: Russ, we can sit here and talk about religious issues. I will be glad to take your question, and if there is more, I will get back to you on that.

Mokhiber: Is he a born again Christian?

Scott McLellan: Thank you. (McLellan abruptly ends the press briefing and walks out.)

1. "Press Conferences" with Scottie ...
... are an exercise in futility.

To my knowledge, the man has never actually answered any question put to him.

3. True enough. But it's blissful to watch Russell nail him with
questions that NEED to be asked. It WAS more fun with Ari the Egghead though.

2. Arrogant heretics
of all religions go against the very fundamentalist teachings they lay claim to. According to the most mystical myth of "rebuilding the Temple" since so many human rebuildings were botched and led to horrible tragedies, only the messiah in a time of complete righteousness has the authority to do so.

The Christians would say much the same thing except that Jesus is much less concerned with bunch of rocks piled on a particular piece of geography. In fact, the only Messiah, recognized only by Christians, would scoff and rage at this murderous fanaticism.

But the fundies of all faiths are made of sterner stuff than God. They want it now and they will do it. Like Herod the great or the zealous returnees from Babylon or Solomon the building of the Temple is in your face pride, a glorification of the state outside all religious concerns and a religious travesty constantly abused.

Wailing wall indeed. For once the symbolism is 100% spot on for the "temple" but so many of those performing the prayers probably don't get it enough to combat the boobs who want the temple made of human hands back around the false idol of human pride.

7. This, I feel, was a seminal moment, a liminal moment

The press actually raised these questions.

Scottie boy ran away.

The questions remain unanwered.

"Mr. pResident, do you or don't you support efforts to re-build the temple on Temple Mount? Yes or no?"

more to come...?
