How hard ar YOU willing to fight to defend Social Security?
I presume everyone would generally agree that bush is going to go after it. The trillion dollar price tag will accomplish two very primary objectives: 1) the massive borrowing will force drastic cuts in all domestic programs; the government will literally be starved for cash. States will have to fend for themselves. 2) by raiding social security, the crime family will have finally gotten their hands on golden goose. After having taken prominent ownership positions in the defense industry, after having bankrupted the savings and loan industry and sticking us with the $500 billion tab, after having emptied the treasury by stealing the huge surpluses, social security is the mother lode. Wall streeters will be the primary beneficiaries of this largesse and they will in turn keep putting into office the men whom they purchase with the money.

This possibly is a "last stand". Please fight hard. Write letters. March. Do whatever you can to fight this fight.

1. I am going to fight tooth and nail
I am 47 years old and plan on retiring in about 15 years. There better be Social Security money there as I've paid in since I've been 16 years old. I want my fair share of what I've paid in through the years. Oh yes, Senators Harkin and Grassley will be hearing from me a lot on this issue, as well as Nussle.

3. On Marketplace (NPR) Last Night, the Analysis Was That
Between the budget and trade deficits, there are some serious questions being raised as to our credit worthiness for funding this thing. It was described as "unlikely," but they said this is where he's spending his political capital from his "mandate."

It is ironic that it could be the biz/financial sectors that kill it.

4. There is no need to change SS
if we do nothing, SS is solvent through 2055. After that, a reduction in benefits or a raise in the age of beneficiaries might be necessary.
The privatization of SS is hooey. The original intent of setting up SS was so that the people would not be at the mercy of the stock market.

6. We need a movement at least equal to the anti Iraq war movement..
I'm willing and have already told my elected representatives that their votes are not enough--we need real opposition.

I'm praying for our progressive groups like Move On, True Majority and even groups like International Answer to get involved. We need millions in the streets. We need to terrify the moderate republicans into stopping this. This is a social justice issue that merits a mass uprising of all ages.

7. this is make or break
if the Democratic Party can't whip bu$h's ass on this one it has no reason to exist. Honestly, this should not require a letter writing or e-mail campaign, if a Democratic Party pol doesn't support maintaining SS then they are in the wrong party. Period.
