Did we really just swap out Islamic governments in Afghanistan?
You know that country that we kinda just forgot about?

I was reading the bbc article about Karzai Warning of Afghan Danger

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4076331.stm

and it had the text of the oath of office he took.

"I swear to obey and safeguard the provisions of the sacred religion of Islam, to observe the constitution and other laws of Afghanistan and supervise their implementation, and with the assistance of God and the support of the nation, to make great and sincere efforts for the happiness and progress of the people of Afghanistan."

Seems more like we are spreading theocracy throughout the Middle East if this is what we end up with in the final cut.

1. No
Just because Karzai is a Muslim, that doesn't mean that Afghanistan has an Islamic goverment (ie theocracy). In court, people often swear on a Bible. It doesn't make the courtroom a religious trial.

Our President's have been Christians (for the most part, anyway) but that hasn't made this a Christian nation or any other sort of theocracy. At least, not yet.

4. He is swearing to obey and uphold Islam.

Would you not be the least bit worried if this was our oath of office:

"I swear to obey and safeguard the provisions of the sacred religion of Christianity, to observe the constitution and other laws of the United States and supervise their implementation, and with the assistance of God and the support of the nation, to make great and sincere efforts for the happiness and progress of the people of The United States."

When the first part of an oath of office is to obey and safeguard the traditions of a particular religion, that smacks of a theocracy.

Editted because the title was inflammatory.

5. Yes he is, and I don't like it either
It's just not the same thing as a theocracy

3. No. Afghanistan is now a narco-feudal state...
... effectively run by a consortium of warlords. Karzai is little more than the mayor of his block in Kabul.

The warlords controlling the opium and hashish trades run the country.
