DU is not underground, its not even democratic.
When I think of an underground I think of a rather radical group.

For example: An underground comic used to be something by R Crumb.

When I count the # of alerts, ignore status and deleted works I have inspired with rather innocent cartoons and graphics (never any profanity) I can only say this site is more of a Democratic milk toast.

I suppose an image is far more powerful than some of the rough language I see here all the time.

Truth be told I had much less trouble with artistic freedom on Republican websites - and I'm no Republican.

3. Does the kind of "underground" where an R. Crumb flourished
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 03:26 PM by deutsey
exist anymore?

If so, I'd love for someone to help me find it. Seems to me the last really vital underground (politically and artistically) maybe lasted from the '50s to maybe the mid-'70s; then there were various other underground scenes in the '80s and '90s, but they never had the same cultural influence as Crumb's day.

9. The "youth culture" of the 1960s was really something
There were a huge number of people born during the early baby boom and it attracted a lot of attention. The fashion designers picked up on the hottest trends and big business snapped up the record labels to get a piece of all that action. What was ironic was all that was driven by a true sense of rebellion--the civil rights movement, the antiwar movement, and the permissiveness of free love and drug experimentation.

5. Maybe some people just aren't interested in graphics
I, for one, still use a dial-up internet connection at home, and I'm not interested in waiting to see somebody's art.

It's only about why I'm choosing to visit DU (which is for news, opinion, and camaraderie). I'm not saying that your work doesn't have value. I'm saying that many people may have different reasons for choosing to "ignore" a post or a poster.

6. Need a crying towel, Don?
You could pry open your wallet and spend some of your own money and set up a website that more accords with your vision of what is truly "underground" and "democratic."

Until then, this looks like self-serving whining to me. Go ahead and hit "alert" now.

But it falls outside the realm of normalcy when you drink the milk directly from the cow's teat.

11. There IS a real underground here.
All of these forums are just a front.

Not too many people are given the secret password to the REAL underground, especially whiners.

15. It's true that DU is not democratic in it's moderating system.
There is a workable alternative in 'community-self-moderation'. www.slashdot.org is an example of that.

Then again, "Democratic" in the context this site refers to the subjects of discussion rather then the nature of the moderating system.

I'd say DU is underground in some repects. Not a majority, but more then a few here hold pretty radical views. And nearly all of DU is pretty underground relative to what is now political mainstream as defined by the government and the media.

Otoh i think it's good that DU is still fairly mainstream, as that helps DU to attract Democrats and lefties from all over the left part of the political spectrum - including some part of the center even. That makes for interesting debates.

18. You would think someone so "underground"
Would know that it's "Milquetoast", from the 1920's comic-strip character Caspar Milquetoast, created by Harold Webster. Give credit where credit is due. :eyes:
