Subject: Bush and the Moonies
I have a previous post on the subject that is more complete, but as a non-donor, I can't find it on the DU board.
It would be cool if someone could please post the link here. Thanks.
Meanwhile, here is something about Bush and the Moonies that I have in my "Sent Mail" folder:
The Moon's the Limit

Anyone can proclaim to be the messiah. It's easy: find a public place, a corner outside a liquor store, a city square, and start preaching the gospel. Provided such individuals are not inciting violence, they're entertaining and, at most, mildly annoying when pestering passersby for change. One can't really argue with people who are convinced they are the next Jesus Christ; they will continue to believe whatever they want to believe.
However, it's highly unlikely that a self-proclaimed messiah will get enough attention to get, say, crowned. Especially not in a ceremony with members of the U.S. Congress present. Especially not in a Senate office building. Right?
It's amazing how much "respect" money can buy these days.
On March 23, 2004, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, leader of the international Unification Church (whose followers are commonly called "Moonies"), was "crowned" at the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., regal robes and all. The event created a media stir in June, three months after the fact, but Moon's influence goes much deeper than the duping of a few senators. Using the millions of dollars he's made through thousands of front groups, Moon has infiltrated the U.S. government, media, and even public schools in order to further the agenda of what many critics call a cult religion.

Harvest Moon: Controversial Evangelist Reaps 'Faith-Based' Windfall
At least four operatives of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church are on the federal payroll or getting government grants through President George W. Bush's "Healthy Marriage Initiative" and other "faith-based" programs.
An investigative report by the San Francisco Chronicle found troubling
connections between a government - sponsored "Certified Marriage Education Training Seminar" and Moon front groups. The Oakland seminar was led by Josephine Hauer, a graduate of Moon's Unification Theological Seminary in New York and a "marriage specialist" in the employ of the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services.
In addition to money from the "Healthy Marriage Initiative," Moon's Free Teens USA has received $475,000 from the Health Resources and Services Administration, a division of HHS, to run abstinence - education programs. Free Teens USA has been criticized for espousing Unification Church tenets, specifically the emphasis on blood lineage.
Moon has also donated $1 million to the George H.W. Bush presidential library and has paid the former president exorbitant speaking fees.
Just before George W. Bush's inauguration, John Ashcroft attended Moon's Inaugural Prayer Luncheon for Unity and Renewal. In December of 2002, James Towey, director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, delivered the keynote address at Moon's three-day God and World Peace summit.
George W. Bush has also appointed a top official for Moon in Washington to head AmeriCorps VISTA.
Earlier this year, a bipartisan group of congressional members attended a coronation event for Moon in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
These important political connections and the ongoing stream of funding to Moon operatives troubles church-state separation advocates and defenders of good government. Spending tax dollars to educate children and adults in the tenets of a particular religious belief is unconstitutional and unacceptable.
http://blog.au.org/2004/10/harvest_moon160.htmlOn March 23, *2004*, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon,
leader of the international Unification Church (whose followers
are commonly called “Moonies”), was “crowned” at
the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.,
regal robes and all.
When *George W. Bush* was sworn into office, Moon’s
Washington Times Foundation threw an Interfaith Inaugural
Prayer Luncheon featuring 1,700 religious leaders,
public officials, and religious right operatives, including
then-Senator John Ashcroft, Representative Davis, Southern
Baptist Convention President James Merritt, televangelist
Jerry Falwell, and Pat Boone.
Some of Moon’s most active political organizers
have gained government positions in *George W. Bush’s*
administration. For example, David Caprara, former leader
of the American Family Coalition (AFC), a faith-based
social action group whose funding comes straight from the
Washington Times Foundation and the Unification Church,
was appointed in 2001 as director of AmeriCorps Vista,
which works with community organizations in low-income
neighborhoods.
Another Unification Church–affiliated individual singled
out for promotion by * Bush* is Josette Shiner, who was
appointed U.S. Deputy Trade Representative in 2003.
Governor George W. Bush sent a congratulatory letter to the Moonie founded "Women's Federation For World Peace" when they held a large banquet in the Governor's state of Texas, according to the October 1996 Unification News.
Moon's groups have taken home grant money from the Bush Administration, which has given his anti-sex missionaries $475,000 in Abstinence-Only dollars to bring Moon's crusade against "free sex" to both black New Jersey high-schoolers and native Africans. The Centers for Disease Control briefly announced that another Moon foundation was the only group qualified to receive another, no-bid grant for HIV education in Africa. Only after a competitor raised objections did
the CDC cancel the grant program entirely. Meanwhile, one of Moon's top political movers, David Caprara, has been appointed by George W. Bush to head AmeriCorps VISTA; and another former church VIP, Josette Shiner, was given a senior trade position.
