LONDON (Reuters) - The dollar staged a comeback on Wednesday, as investors took profits on other major currencies on signs that currency strength may prompt some central banks to scale back interest rate tightening.

Worries about the United States' ability to fund its huge current account deficit have led to persistent weakness in the dollar, taking it to fresh record lows against the euro on Tuesday and five-year lows against the yen last week.

Lower oil prices and signs that currency strength may prompt some central banks to scale back interest rate tightening prompted investors to lock in profits on gains against the dollar ahead of the Christmas holidays when trade is likely to be thin.
