Poll: Spitzer Leads Pataki in NY Race
ALBANY, N.Y. Dec 8, 2004 — Democrat Eliot Spitzer has a double-digit lead over Republican Gov. George Pataki in the 2006 governor's race, but the state attorney general trails outgoing Secretary of State Colin Powell in a hypothetical matchup, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Spitzer led Pataki 50 percent to 38 percent in the poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Pataki has not yet said if he will seek a fourth term as governor two years from now. He has also been considered a possible opponent to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2006, but the poll showed the senator widely favored, 58 percent to 36 percent.

The poll also showed Colin Powell trailing Clinton in a hypothetical 2006 Senate race, 44 percent to 49 percent.

1. Looks like Hillary is pretty popular in NY. Those are encouraging numbers
for Dems.

I can't imagine a scenario which would help Republicans.

All four of those candidates are well known by the public so it's not like getting to know any of them better is going to help or hurt their numbers.

Scandal is the only thing that would really make a difference.

Barring scandal, if anyone is going to beat Clinton and Spitzer it's will be a little-known peson with a lot of money whom people will like more and more as the public gets to know him or her...and that's just not the kind of person who has an easy time winning elections in NY. NY likes its governors and senators to be bigger than life.

Also, I think NY'ers are probably going to be sick of Republicans thanks to Bush.

3. Any Republican that backed Bush from NY...
won't be able to win a senate seat or become Gov. Rudy and Pataki are probably finished in that state.

2. I wish Spitzer would stay on as AG. He is probing the music industry.
He will find some vile, evil shit in that house.

5. Me too. He's in the great tradition of NY pols, beginning with Tilden, Al
Smith, even non-pols like Robert Moses.

He's going to get a lot of NY'ers in touch with what it means to be a NY'er. He's really going to energize the party. He could very easily be Governor for Life he wanted to be (NY doesn't have term limits, does it?).
