What Democrats need to say about social issues
Republican states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Oklahoma have an array of social-ills. These states lead the nation in divorce, teen pregnancy, domestic violence and other social categories.

States like Massachusetts and Connecticut do not face these problems. Whether gays are allowed to marry has no influence on the social issues facing the people in these states.

Economic opportunity is one determinate in the social outcomes of individuals. The south has supported Republicans for 30 years and economic prospects have remained stagnant.

They use wedge issues like abortion and gay marriage to keep people sidetracked away from this reality.
