I've been thinking for some time that at least a few protesters will be killed. We already know what they did to peaceful demonstrators during the campaign; they'll be far worse now that they feel they've got unchecked power.
On the other hand the person relaying this information to us should relay back to his or her source that law enforcement, too, should think carefully before they act. Sooner or later, they will have to answer for any crimes they commit against the citizens of this nation. Every fascist state has eventually fallen, and most within a couple of decades. What they might be rewarded for in January 2005 is just as likely to get them charged with a capital offense in 2020. "Just following orders" has never been a defense in these situations -- only faithfully following the Constitution, and respecting its protection of the right of the people to assemble, will be a shield to them. And feel free to let them know this warning is coming from a lifelong Republican and student of history, someone who still has old friends on the Republican side of the aisle in Congress, and not some "hippy traitor librul Democrat". We do still value our Constitution, all of us, out here in the rest of America, and we and the rest of the world will be watching closely their every move. They should not think for a moment that controlling American mainstream media, something a majority of Americans now say they don't trust or believe, will make them safe.
If I wasn't a wheelchair user who needs the help of an attendant even to go across the street to the convenience store, I'd be there in January, prepared to follow in the footsteps of Crispus Attucks if that's what my country needs from me. Instead I'm doing what I can do from home, working the telephone and e-mail to organize a broad based pro-democracy organization in my town. Meager as it is, this, too, might some day get me arrested or killed. We all have to realize that there aren't any safe forms of political expression in America right now. And, once we wrap our heads around that grim fact and resign ourselves to whatever our fate may be, we have to fight passionately and fearlessly for our nation and our communities and families, as only those who have given up all hope for themselves can do.
