Bush on prejudging
From the AP
"We will not raise payroll taxes to solve this problem," Bush said as he met in the Oval Office with a panel of advisers on the Social Security issue. Bush sidestepped questions about whether the nation can afford to borrow in order to confront a shortfall in the trillions of dollars. "I will not prejudge any solution," Bush said.

Can you spot the contradiction in the statement.

1. Yes, but it's irrelevant
Payroll taxes have ALREADY been raised to "solve this problem". The problem isn't Social Security, it's the bottomless-pit Republican Deficit Spending that is the problem.

3. The only way there will be a shortfall...
... of "trillions of dollars" is if the Bushies default on all the money borrowed from the Social Security trust fund.

And, yes, he's already prejudged the situation by ignoring the effect that tax cuts have had on his previous budgets. The issue isn't so much borrowing as borrowing a lot more on top of borrowing a shitload to cover the previous tax cuts, and by ruling out payroll tax increases when he says no solution will be ignored. In BushSpeak, however, taxes are never a solution to the problem--therefore, he has not offered a contradiction.

To the rest of us down here on earth, it is precisely that.

5. Seems to me
He's already prejudged the raising payroll tax plan, but oh no he won't prejudge his parties plan. Why is there a magic barrier to payroll taxes?
