'Beckham Nativity' Tableau Outrages Churches

Church leaders condemned on Wednesday a Christmas nativity tableau depicting English soccer star David Beckham as Joseph and his pop singer wife Victoria as the Virgin Mary.

British and U.S. leaders Tony Blair and George W. Bush also starred as two of The Three Wise Men at the birth of Christ.

Anglicans, Catholics and Presbyterians united in calling the exhibit -- at Madame Tussaud's waxwork museum in London -- a new low in the cult of celebrity worship.

In the tableau, Australian pop star Kylie Minogue also hovers above the crib as an angel, while "Posh Spice" Victoria lays her shawled head tenderly on Beckham's shoulder.

The shepherds are played by Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson, UK actor Hugh Grant and camp Irish comic Graham Norton.

The Vatican was not amused.

a spokeswoman said the scene would remain until Jan. 3 because the public seemed to like it :)

2. Trussard's isn't trying hard enough
They should have had a pygmy-sized Sinead O'Connor as the baby Jesus. THAT would really piss off the Vatican.

4. Yeah, but do they have a pygmy sized Sinead O'Connor lying around?
Personally, I think Yoda should play the baby Jesus.

3. I love it, it's not like people wil confuse Samuel L. Jackson with
a real wise man. When religion and religious people stop taking themselves so seriously that is when they will see the evil they do in the name of their God.

Relax people. It's just wax. None of the nativity scenes they sell in the dollar store look like the real people either. Are you going to boycott all stores that carry nativity scenes?

5. Good Fucking Deity!
Are they going to condemn "The Passion Of The Christ" For depicting James Caviezel as Geeze-us or Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene? I can't take much more of this BS from the Christians. What the fuck do you people. want?

8. A bit of art history for those huffy about this
Gee -- funny how paintings done a few hundred years ago, showing rich famous and powerful people (art patrons) depicted in religious scenes are okay; an artist using his mistress or some other "impure" woman as his model for the Virgin is okay, just because people don't recognize them any more.

I think its a hoot that people are upset about this. Funny how times have changed -- a few hundred years ago and Jerry Falwell would have paid the best artist he could afford to paint him into a nativity scene, and maybe sneak his secret girlfriend into too! I bet a lot of people back in the times these works were created were similarly weirded out by "profane" persons portraying "the sacred" -- whereas no one knows these folks anymore except very arcane art historians.

I love the Beckham nativity; it is a hilarious and thought-provoking piece of art.
