Column: Political wars are over, but killing continues in Iraq, Afghanistan

By David Nyhan
Staff writer

All that was missing was the 60-foot banner from Karl Rove's political shop that should have said: "Mission NOT Accomplished!"

There he was again, our boyish commander-in-chief, tricked out again in his military-style garb, with a six-inch-wide badge on the right shoulder of some kind of fleecy, beige wannabe flight jacket, suitably framed against a backdrop of camouflage-clad Marines at Camp Pendleton.

Eighteen months ago the presidential warrior flew here to strut in his borrowed flight suit along the flight deck of the carrier Abraham Lincoln, under the infamous "Mission Accomplished!" banner the White House team of political advance men blamed initially on overzealous Navy folk, only to slither away from that canard when the tempest died down.

1. here's another ...
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/saturdayspin/203289_snark11.html

In the brief presidential debate dustup over what some dubbed a suspicious bulge in President Bush's suit jacket, some discredit was directed at the president's tailor, who was -- gasp! -- French. Looking at the photo of Bush talking to troops at Camp Pendleton Tuesday, wearing a tan sort of field jacket, complete with epaulettes, it appears that he's hired away a new tailor from another head of state -- North Korea's Kim Jong Il.

41. He's gotta get gussed up, otherwise people see him for what he is.
A phony who's never amounted to anything on his own. Whatever he's gotten, it's a result of his daddy. That explains why he was drunk until he was 40 and all the evidence of longterm cocaine addiction. He's nuts. And what's truly sad is, he's a NAZI.

his name on the jacket. Does he regularly lose pieces of clothing? I'm surprised there isn't a huge prez seal embroidered over the back. What a monkey turd.

It's the new dumbest thing I've ever seen. He needs a jacket to remind everyone he's the Commander in Chief. Was it on TV? Anybody know what the big round thing is?

It shows Bush in the jacket, standing at a podium with the presidential seal emblazoned on the front. The seal on the jacket and the seal on the podium look the same.

On edit: nevermind, should have read the whole thread. It's the USMC seal. That makes it even more sickening.

7. Correction. "boyish" commander in chief should be "childish"
bush isn't even in command of his own bowel movements, thus he needs to be reminded of his superiority on the world stage.

Hey world, look at our Traveling Freak Show. Ain't it grand?

It's not the presidential seal. It has a light greenish background in the center. I wish someone would enlarge it and show us the detail. I can't do it on my dinoputer.

16. MoDo says it's the seal
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/09/opinion/09dowd.html?oref=login&n=Top%2fOpinion%2fEditorials%20and%20Op%2dEd%2fOp%2dEd%2fColumnists%2fMaureen%20Dowd

The president loves dressing up to play soldier. To rally Camp Pendleton marines facing extended deployments in Iraq, he got gussied up in an Ike D-Day-style jacket, with epaulets and a big presidential seal on one lapel and his name and "Commander in Chief" on the other.

When he really had a chance to put on a uniform and go someplace where the enemy was invisible and there was no exit strategy and our government was not leveling with us about how bad it was, W. wasn't so high on the idea. But now that it's just a masquerade - giving a morale boost to troops heading off someplace where the enemy's invisible and there's no exit strategy and the government's not leveling with us about how bad it is - hey, man, it's cool.

because if you compare the patch on the jacket to the presidential seal on the podium, it's clearly not the same thing.

Perhaps the blue background on the embroidered seal was altered to make for better color coordination.

That could be important to a narcissist.

Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 05:00 PM by neebob
according to this article from the Camp Pendleton website:

http://www.cpp.usmc.mil/test.htm?http&&&www.pendleton.usmc.mil/scout/archives/master.asp

<snip>
Thousands of Marines representing nearly every command on Camp Pendleton greeted the president with a round of "ooh-rahs." Bush, wearing a tanker jacket with a United States Marine Corps emblem on the right side and a Commander-In-Chief stitched on the left, thanked U.S. forces for making the sacrifices needed to make America safer.
<snip>

Check out the "Recent Releases" on the right. Camp Pendleton Marine Dies in Iraq. Camp Pendleton Marine Dies in Iraq. Camp Pendleton Marine Dies in Iraq.

There are 50 or 60 of them, going back to January 2004.

Anyway, I guess Bush is also now a marine, since he's allowed to wear the insignia.

25. Never
I did research on it, since I've been writing a big paper on Eisenhower. As far as I can tell, he never donned military garb when he became a civilian; except possibly at a memorial, which many soldiers do, including my grandfather. He strongly believed that the presidency was a civilian position and that the military needed to be subordinate to civilian authority.
