Marines hunt down Fallujah's strays to head off rabies threat

(rabies?)

-snip-

But this time the marines are not chasing down the insurgents who they defeated in a devastating assault on the city last month. Their quarry is stray animals grown fat on the flesh from corpses and who could harbor rabies.

-snip-

"If you consider the entire public health situation, with nobody in town, there's no public health crisis, and if it is prepared correctly there won't be a health crisis," Staggs said Wednesday.

-snip-

But there was none of the bloodlust that many marines say they felt last month as they stormed the Sunni-Muslim enclave and wrested it away from insurgents during several days of vicious fighting.

A gunnery sergeant stalked past the convoy, tersely ordering his executioners to put on surgical gloves before handling the dead animals, his mouth pulled into the tight grimace of a man trying to finish the job before him as quickly as possible.

"This is hard on these guys, especially killing the dogs. But these animals have been eating dead bodies. They can spread disease," said Lieutenant Aaron Brown, grimly reciting the toll for the day -- several cats and at least one dog.

I didn't know the city was empty of live human beings. did you?

so the plan is to kill absolutely any live thing in the city before anyone is let back in.

and the people who are let back in have to wear a armband giving info on themselves, etc., etc.

and this is happening in our name....america is doing this in the year 2004 almost 5.

this is insanity.

I want a world revolution.

3. Explain the logic to me
Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 01:19 PM by Coventina
How is eating a dead human body going to give a dog rabies?

And if the city is full of unburied bodies, isn't it a GOOD thing the dogs are eating them? I realize that wild dogs are scavengers, so it's just nature at work. I mean, the dogs eating them would PREVENT disease, not spread it from what I understand.

Anybody better at science than I am?

The killing of the dogs sounds stupid and short sighted to me. It's just creating MORE dead bodies, isn't it?

on edit: clarity

8. No, dogs eating rotting bodies is not a good thing
#1: It's a health crisis, whether or not it involves rabies. The dogs can pass on all sorts of virulent agents.

#2: The dogs, once the fresh meat runs out, will turn on the living.

10. I'll grant you number 1
but I highly question #2.

ANY pack of dogs would be potentially dangerous to livestock or solitary humans, whether they have feasted on dead humans or not. I really don't think the fact that they've eaten dead human makes them any more likely to attack.

Ah well, it's not worth arguing over anyway. The ultimate point is that the whole Iraq thing is a monstrous clusterfuck that ends in brutality for every living creature.

It just makes me sad, because WE created this. The dogs didn't. They're just following the instincts the Great Mother gave them.
I have to go and cuddle my Sarah now.

27. You said

"Carrion is the gateway drug to predation"

This is so true!

In fact, it is so dangerous, and creates such a high prediliction toward predation that movement of the dead between countries is strictly prohibited except in very small quantities. People have been known to spread it from country to country via airline flights.

And it is for this very reason that we are only allowed...

*****PUN ALERT*********

Wait for it...

Yes, it isn't going to be pretty...

Are you CERTAIN you want to read this?...

Well, all right...

Don't say I didn't warn you...

It is the reason passengers on all flights are allowed
only ONE item of carrion luggage per flight!

12. I read a different article about the killing of the Fallujah dogs/cats
- in that article they said they were doing it because of an outbreak of Rabies. I have no idea if this is true but it would not be unusual and would make a lot more sense. Rabies is very real problem in feral dogs and cats in many countries.

And it didn't surprise me some of the soldiers had trouble killing these animals. They have managed to dehumanize the Iraqis to "less than vermin" or "butchering terrorists" but they failed to make the disconnect between these soldiers' own beloved pets and these poor creatures.

16. I did not say they weren't. But right now they are running loose
without anyone caring for them and they are being subjected to the same risk of Rabies that a feral dog/cat would have. I was simply stating that the possibility of a Rabies outbreak is real.

I am horrified by this. Even if it is true - that there is a Rabies outbreak, it is our fault. And if it isn't, it wouldn't be the first time military officers ordered the shooting of "stray" dogs in the field.

5. Let Freedom Reign. Job well done, Mr. President. Mission Accomplished.

June 28, 2004: Iraq is now sovereign. By now, you know all the details, but here's how President Bush found out -- while seated next to British PM Tony Blair at the NATO meetings this morning.

11. So, what happens when dogs and cats are all dead. Rats feasting on
bodies. Hmmm, let's think about what rats tend to carry and spread when left unchecked by natural predators. We are gonna have a whole lotta sick soldiers.

17. For some of the soldiers, they need to kill something
Just to get it out of their system. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'

It's all very sad, really. Priorities don't seem to matter anymore, do they? All that matters are their orders, and survival.

19. These young soldiers are going to come home seriously messed up
I am middle-aged, and I'm reasonably sure that my mental health would not withstand what the White House is asking these troops to do.

I can't imagine my teen sons living through this and not being emotionally scarred for life.

We have truly opened the gates of Hell.

28. The plan for Fallujah
In case anyone missed it last week, no one can claim we evil DUers are exaggerating the extent of American evil in Iraq. We have become what we hate.

http://www.boston.com/news/world/articles/2004/12/05/returning_fallujans_will_face_clampdown

Returning Fallujans will face clampdown
By Anne Barnard, Globe Staff | December 5, 2004

snip...

Under the plans, troops would funnel Fallujans to so-called citizen
processing centers on the outskirts of the city to compile a database
of their identities through DNA testing and retina scans. Residents
would receive badges displaying their home addresses that they must
wear at all times. Buses would ferry them into the city, where cars,
the deadliest tool of suicide bombers, would be banned.

snip...

One idea that has stirred debate among Marine officers would require
all men to work, for pay, in military-style battalions. Depending on
their skills, they would be assigned jobs in construction, waterworks,
or rubble-clearing platoons.
