What Liberal/Progressive periodicals are there? What are your favorites?
I'd love to know what periodicals I need to support and subscribe to?
I know The Nation is one. Help me build my list. I think subscriptions to Liberal/Progressive periodicals would make great x-mas gifts.

5. don't forget Hightower Lowdown
Issues aren't very long, but it has lots of good commentary from Jim Hightower.

On the economics side, don't forget Dollars & Sense.

3. There are still...
... even in these days of overwhelming conservative slant, a few worthy of consideration:

The Progressive

American Prospect

Harper's

Mother Jones

The Utne Reader

You could also consider gift donations to organizations such as:

Center for Public Integrity

http://www.publicintegrity.org

Citizens for Tax Justice

http://www.ctj.org

DemocracyNow!

http://www.democracynow.org

Or you could give them gift memberships to DU, huh?

Cheers.

8. The Nation, In These Times, Mother Jones.
We give about 6 Christmas gifts to the Nation ...OUr major source of gifts...The Nation is the Nation's oldest magazine...
In These Times seems pretty bold at printing new revelations.
Electronic media..Favorite source is "Democracy Now."
Nation couple weeks ago strongly encouraged contributions to their Nation Associates...Funding agent for the magazine...Said the magazine is running huge defecits..As New Deal age people die off, their subscriptions suffer...What the hell does the future hold..No alternative voice...

10. Thanks to all for your suggestions, I'm going to start ordering
my xmas gifts on line and a lot of these will be included. I was thinking of my dad primarilly. My dad is having an awakening. He's never been a rethug nor particulary conservative. I do however want him to be armed with info. He has a great amount of influence and I want him to be able to point out the truth when confronted by black rethugs.

12. Here's my list
Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 05:28 PM by zmdem
All online editions:

The Nation
American Prospect
Counterpunch, (very far to the left, but interesting)
Guardian UK, (liberal UK newspaper, great website)
The Progressive
Alternet
Mother Jones

In the guilty pleasures dept:
opednews

Some of these have print editions, some don't.

Also, The New Republic, esp. for a moderate Democratic perspective, (think DLC).

ON EDIT: The Atlantic Monthly

13. believe it or not, the New Yorker!
They very often have very good editorials and articles. They were the first to publish recent Seymour Hersh stories that he later worked into his latest book.

and their cartoons are funny.

14. Don't forget the Crawford Iconoclast!
They have reinvented themselves as a national tabloid. Their latest featured a prominant article on Votergate, the alternate theories on 9/11 and Jimmy Walter, and an editorial about the draft.

I love the new Iconoclast. It's a great gift!
