3. who stayed out of it ? We allowed the brits to use
an Island; Christmas? or Ascention?(the one in the mid Atlantic) where we were the Current leasholders. The Malvinas were an opportunity for Ireland to retake ulster, Spain to grab Gibralter,Guatemala to retake Belize and China =hong kong. if this had been done simultaneously Argentina would have prevailed( My Dream)

7. That is when the Monroe Doctrine should have been enforced
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 05:08 PM by mitchtv
Treacherous Chile should have been dealt with afterward. thank god they are now a democracy. Argentina, also. BTW, i visited the Malvinas wall two years ago. If only Argentina had invested in more small cheap jets and more expensive exocets. The Airforce performed admirably.
The Belgrano accounted for a great deal of the names on the wall.

10. Argentina's defeat in the Malvinas brought down the dictatorship
The government that carried out the Dirty War. That seems to me more important than who controls the islands.

11. Yes, taking those by force was the only option.
Much better than them changing hands in a peaceful manner, is in fact did happen with HK.

Where did you graduate ? The George W Bush school of foreign affairs ?

8. Not going to happen.
The UK has maintained a strong force on the islands since 82. The Argentines would not get within a hundred miles of the place. They only tried the first time because they were under the control of a military dictator.

Also FYI Ascension Island is a British possesion

The government building.

12. Argentina has defeated Britain twice militarily
During the Napoleonic wars, when Ferdinand VII sat in a French prison and Joseph Bonaparte ruled Spain, Britain tried twice to take Argentina (then the Viceroyalty of La Plata) twice, but Argentina's home grown militias were able to defeat them as what was left of the the Spanish army fled to the interior. Clearly, to defeat the world's leading military empire at that point was a remarkable accomplishment. The generals in the early 1980s no doubt thought their country could prevail once again. Fortunately, they failed and their horrific government collapsed as a result. It's hard for me to imagine that Argentina, with the tragic state of it's economy, would try that today. That's why I asked for a link on this report of re-militarization in Argentina. It strikes me as odd, and I would like to read about it.
Wasn't it Argentine courts that recently ruled Carlos Menen could be indicted for crimes against the nation? I'm not as current as Argentina as I need to be, so I'd appreciate any links. I really need to restart my subscription to NACLA.
Thanks

14. The US leases an airbase from the British
on the island. I don't know what you mean by "alternating lease". The island is a British Overseas Territory.
