The BEST Christmas/Hannukah Story of the Season."Pale Male & Lola"
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 10:05 PM by KoKo01
in the Damon Runyonesque Tradition...Give it to NYC...they exposed Kerik and now have the best story in many years that needs a Movie made of the SAGA!

Here are the links for those who have the time and want a good read...

2. There is a *movie* about Male Pale, the red-tailed hawk . . .

see: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/palemale/

edited to ad photos of Pale Male and Lola (Red-Tail Hawks) in their nest on the facade of one of Upper Manhattan's most exclusive residential cooperatives -- the 12th floor facade of 927 Fifth Avenue at 74th Street, New York City, overlooking Central Park . . .

3. Wow...thanks for the link...I hope our DU Environmentalists will get into
this along with the rest of us who just need a break from the Kerry stuff for a little bit...It's a holiday season...it's nice to have a story that speaks to the heart...even if it's about "humanizing" our feathered friends in a "heart-warming" story about Nature vs Greed.

4. Well, Pale Male has been a *resident* upon the facade of this
exclusive Upper Manhattan building since 1995, has had several female mates all whom have died but for his most recent mate-for-life, Lola, in 2003? or 2004.

However, this month or last month, the residents of the building removed the nest site together w/ the spikes* that held the nesting material in place. Now, there's a movement in Manhattan to reinstate the spikes that held the nesting material in place so that Lola and Male Pale may, once again, make their nest upon that buildings facade . . . tis an interesting story. PBS website. The other website www.palemale.com is good too.

*The spikes were placed upon the facade of the building as a deterrent for pigeons.

5. Paula Zahn's husband is the "villain"
of this tale since he is the chair of the condo board where the hawks live. Zahn must have received dozens of leters because now her husband is backtracking and the hawks will be allowed to return...but this time they will have to live on the roof instead of the nice little cozy spot they were used to. Zahn's husband said that he backed down because people were running up to their little 7 year old son and yelling at him about the birds. I don't believe that for a second. I think it was about how the story was affecting Zahn's popularity as a tv personality. Well, anyway...the good news is that the birds should be back home in a couple of weeks.

BTW, it's a cooperative, not a condominium. And, thanks for the info.

8. I wondered if Zahn's little kiddies and she weren't upset about dead rats

and the stuff the birds eat dropping on their balcony, patio or whatever
their Co-op has for "fresh air." One of the articles mentioned the birds eating things with "blood dripping" and such.

I guess it was too much for Zahn and some others...although they should be glad the birds are eating some of the stuff they pay mega bucks for the pest control to take care of. :D

10. Well. In all truthfulness . . . I empathize w/ the cooperative
occupants and come down on their side.

They've suffered high-powered telescopes, cameras, binoculars, etc., peering into their windows since 1995 from folks gathered around the pond in Central Park similar to *groupies,* there's shit droppings to the sidewalk below as well as dead and bloody carcases of animals dropping upon the sidewalk and people below . . . not so much that this is an exclusive area of Manhattan but merely because of health and safety issues. Why put up anti-pigeon wirings/spikes to stop pigeons from nesting but then to attract Red-Tailed Hawk nest as a result of those very wirings/spikes?

It makes no sense.

On the other hand, it's a delight to watch these hawks . . . however, Mary Tyler Moore can be a bit *too* empathic at times . . .

All in all the cooperative residents have been very patient since 1995.

However, I can see both sides, and I opt for removing the hawks to another location being it the roof or to some other adjacent building as long as the down-side can be prevented. Of course, no one can force the hawks to nest anywhere but one can build a nesting stand for them atop this building or an adjacent building . . .

12. Build a "nesting stand." Surely they could collect the funds for this and
even put some pickets around it to make it comfy...

pigeons, etc and I can imagine it might be disgusting. I think the reason people are so sympathetic is because the hawks are rare? And most go further south or north or something and this guy just made up his mind to live facing Central Park. Location...location...location.Since his nest was removed, he and his "wife" have been just circling the neighborhood...homeless. It is important that they get settled somewhere quickly because mating season is approaching...

11. My pretty knowledgeable husband says
this will not work, that he will move his nest if he cannot see all around him. He is secure with the building behind him and able to see in all directions. Hope they know what they're doing. Pale Male is gorgeous.

13. Maybe all the "cell phone/sattelite towers" will attract them. Birds are
having to adapt to all the new stuff around them just like we humans.

Although I wonder about all the buzzing those towers must be emitting...

Might interfere with their bird radar or something. I think they are making all of us crazy..with low level emitted waves...but then it could be just living with Bush..that has some of us crazy and not all the NOISE...we don't hear but's there.
